First ever O70s win in friendly v Devon at Newton Abbot
The Cornwall O70 side, put together by Paul Dawkins, is played a series of friendly games in 2024 with a view to entering the National Over 70s Championship in 2025 and travelled to Newton Abbot to play Devon in a 40 over trial game. To ensure everyone had a chance to shine, batsmen retired at 30, or earlier if they were being particularly boring.
Cornwall batted first and early progress was slow but Mike Conbeer made his way steadily to 34 before someone remembered the retirement rule. Chris Andretti with another 30*, Iain Barker (20*) and Bob Fleming (34*) perked up the scoring rate so that Cornwall finished on 175-3 after 40 overs with 5 batsmen retired not out.
Devon started slowly but opening batsman Rose started to attack and was first to reach 30. After he retired progress slowed again and wickets started to fall. Iain Barker bowled 6 accurate overs for just 14 runs and Mike Conbeer picked up a couple of wickets each as Devon started to fall behind the run rate.
Some unexpectedly good catches were taken including one by Paul Brookes off John Pollard’s bowling and wicketkeeper Kevin Hicks collected two great catches and two stumpings. With Devon still needing 40 off the last 8 overs, wickets fell more quickly as the pressure mounted. Bob Fleming chipped in with a run-out and then returned to bowl capturing 3 wickets while captain Paul Dawkins’ leg-breaks accounted for 2 more. Opening batsman Rose returned after all other batsmen had been and gone but was last out in the final over with 11 still needed. A landmark win for Cornwall.
Cornwall: 175-3, 40 overs - Conbeer 34*, Andretti 30*, Fleming 34*
Devon: 165 all out, 39.1 overs – Rose 43, Fleming 3-27, Dawkins 2-15, Brookes 2-16
