2023 Summary:
This was the second season for this team and without doubt they are getting closer to that elusive first win. 2nd XI's prosper when 1st XI's get stronger thus gaining players with 1st XI experience. This didn't happen in 2023 with the 1st XI having no regular new players and largely fielding the same team from 2021 whilst dropping from first to last in the South West group. This impacted the 2nd XI. Nevertheless there were some close matches: losing to Gloucestershire by just 9 runs chasing 263 then in the next game losing to Devon by just one run with skipper Martin Orpe run out on the last ball. Given the turbulent weather in May and July it was remarkable that the team played every single one of their 12 group matches.
The season finished with a 21 run defeat to Middlesex at Wembley CC in the knockout stages.
24 players played at least one match with Martin Orpe playing all 13, Mark Everett and Brian Martin 11, Mike Jelbert, Mike Smith, Jamie Mead, Sid Lawrence 10 each.
Leading run scorers 2023:
- Jamie Mead 276
- Mike Jelbert 228 - including 104 v Gloucestershire
- Martin Orpe 221
Leading wicket takers 2023:
- Martin Orpe 13
- Sid Lawrence 8
- John Pollard 5
