Under cloudless skies and warm June sunshine, Callington won their top-of-the-table Bond Timber Premier clash with Wadebridge to extend their lead to 16 points after seven games. Time will tell how important the five-wicket success over will be. Wadebridge have dropped to fourth, 23 points off the pace. Needing 202 at Moores Park, the game was in the balance as Callington slipped to 141-5 in the 39th over after Liam Lindsay made 41 at the top of the order. New recruit Jake Rowe proved to be the saviour, hitting 73 not out off 96 balls as victory came with seven balls to spare. Matt Lawrence took 3-32. Earlier, Wadebridge found themselves 58-4 before James Turpin and Callum Wilson both made 62, adding 107 for the fifth wicket. Both fell to the spin of Chris Dent (5-59), Wilson on the final ball of the innings.
Werrington are up to second after a dramatic two-run home win over St Just at Ladycross. Chasing 219, St Just were 208-4 with three overs remaining, with Gareth May (23) and opener Neil Curnow (107) at the crease. However, both fell at the same score, and Werrington clung on after seven were required from Adam Hodgson’s last over. Joe Gore was run out coming back for the second off the penultimate ball. Werrington had been 70-4 before Paul Smith (62) and Ben Smeeth (50) added a match-winning 122 for the fifth wicket. Penzance are up to third after bowling Camborne out for only 73 inside 22 overs at St Clare. Only opener Liam Weeks (29) and Scott Kellow (17) got into double figures. Tom Dinnis bowled his full ten overs to take 5-31, and first change Ben Fletcher took 4-15. Jack Paull made an unbeaten 32 to secure the eight-wicket win in the twentieth over.
Helston lost at Redruth by 109 runs. Redruth were restricted to 214 all out in 48 overs. However, there was a top-order batting collapse for Helston as they were dismissed for 105 inside 33 overs. Redruth managed to post 214, after being 78-5 at one stage. Skipper Liam Norwell hammered 8 sixes in his 82 made off 56 balls. Ryan Tonkin took 3-34. Norwell then struck with the ball, trapping opposing skipper Dan Jenkin for a single. Jamie Veall took four quick wickets to see the visitors slump to 32-5. Veall ended with 4-29. Steve Jenkin made 24 as Helston were all out for 105 in the 33rd over. Grampound Road narrowed the gap at the bottom with St Just to eight points after winning their first game. They were set 245 at home to St Austell but cruised home by seven wickets with 19 balls to spare. Antony Angove (34) and Tom Orpe (30) put on 68 for the first wicket before Harry Gregory (74no) and Ravi Karunarathna (70no) put on an unbeaten 137 for the fourth wicket. Earlier opener Rowen Taplin made 103 not out and Alex Bone 54 in St Austell’s 242-5.
In County Division One, Hayle returned to the top after hitting 245-2 against Falmouth at the Towans. Dan Lello (111no) and Tom Sharp (55no) added an unbeaten 123 for the third wicket. Opener Freddie Ayliffe made 59 for Falmouth in their 148. Stithians pulled off a narrow six-run home win over morning leaders Paul, their first defeat of the league season. Ryan Edwards made 34 for the home side, but on his dismissal at 112, Shane Tangye (24no) and Ryan Mitchell (24) added what was to prove a crucial 42 for the ninth wicket. After being 21-3, Paul’s middle order all contributed to get to 117-6. Overseas, Pieter Gildenhuys made 36. However, Archie Rowe’s 4-37 was the deciding factor at 155 all out in the 43rd over. Truro’s batting proved too strong for Perranporth as they hit 272-3 at Boscawen Park. Raja Hamza Waheed made 101 and Ted Phillips 81. Jack Ivamy’s 4-31 from ten overs saw the visitors all out for 127. Beacon were bowled out for 96 at home to Luckett. Andrew Hoskin and James Wilkinson shared eight wickets. However, Gareth Mankee struck three early blows, including a superb legside stumping by Sam James, as the East Cornwall side collapsed to 49 all out inside 20 overs. Roche got the better of Newquay by 19 runs at Trezaise Road. Fletch Grimsey-Cook made 45 in the home team’s 145, with Joe Crane and Tom Owen doing the damage with four wickets each. Seven Newquay batters got double figures, headed by Owen’s 23. However, Tommy Blake (3-36) and Oscar Green (3-9) made the difference.
