The continuation of hot weather saw a sixth successive week of a full Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League programme played out under blue skies and temperatures down slightly in the low twenties. At the top of the Premier Division there is no change with Penzance leading Wadebridge by six points after both won close games in the final over. Penzance hit 303-3 at home to Werrington with Basil Akram (109) and Charlie Sharland (115no) putting on 224 for the third wicket. Werrington slipped to 103-6 before Mark Gribble went on to make 85. Number ten Dan Barnard (69no) and last man Mark Taskis (24no) then put on an unbroken 80 for the final wicket to end up only eight runs short of a remarkable victory.
At Helston, the home side dominated much of the game, but somehow Wadebridge found a way to win with last man Elliot Dunnett striking the penultimate ball for six over long on. Helston’s top order all contributed to reach 160 before the third wicket fell. Opening Jayden Mitchell made 51, and Karl Leathley 36 before Billy Taylor got 31 and Steve Jenkin 39. Requiring 241, Ryan Tonkin (2-35) and Lewis Stephens (3-22) reduced the visitors to 69-5. However, James Turpin (88) and Ryan Jackson (38) added 101 for the sixth wicket only for Bryn Evans and Sunny Osmont to share four wickets. Matt Lawrence (14no) and Dunnett (25no) required 36 off four overs and ten off the last but got home in dramatic fashion. After four successive defeats, including the WT Edwards Cup Final to Penzance by seven runs, Callington had a welcome seven-wicket win with 23 overs to spare at Camborne. The home side lost seven wickets in reaching the hundred mark before Daniel Stephens top-scored with 28 in the 143. Callington’s top five were all in the runs, led by Matt Whalley’s 41no.
Redruth are a point above Camborne, in fifth, following a six-wicket success at Grampound Road. The home side had been 171-4 with Tom Orpe making 62, but Ellis Whiteford repeated his County 'fifer' at Truro earlier in the week with 5-16 to wrap the tail up. Toby Whiteford (55) was third out at 104 before Attyab Ahmad (65no) and Toby Stoddard (51no) put on an unbroken111 for the fifth wicket. St Austell have hit the foot of the table after fellow strugglers St Just won by five wickets at Wheal Eliza. After being 79-4 the home side recovered to 245-7 thanks to Nadeera Balasuriya getting 88 and Alex Bone 43. In the reply, after Neil Curnow got 31, skipper Gareth May (116) and his son Ellis (61) put on 123 for the second wicket. Victory followed by five wickets with five overs to spare.
In County Division One, Hayle remain top, two points ahead of Paul. Dan Lello’s 115 set them up for 264 at Perranporth, who were dismissed for 164. Tom Sharp and Max Jenkin shared six wickets. Paul won by three wickets at Luckett after being set 192. Luke Brenton made 56 for the hosts, who were undone by Pieter Gildenhuys, who took 5-8 from eight overs. Paul were 112-5 but Charlie Goldsworthy’s 41 set up the win. At the bottom, Falmouth are 13 points behind Luckett and 20 points from safety after an eighth defeat in a row. Newcomer from Lanhydrock, Amir Khan. made 47 on debut at Newquay. The last six wickets fell for 31 to be 134 all out in the 37th over. Reaching 100 before losing their third wicket, the hosts eased home for a third win on the bounce by seven wickets with almost 15 overs to spare. Tom Owen and Adam Cocking got thirties. Roche got a useful win at an understrength Beacon by eight wickets. Kris Martin hit a late 36 to get the total to 144, but the visitors wasted no time getting the runs in the 13th over for the loss of two wickets. George Oakley hit 72 off 30 balls. Truro hammered 358-7 at home to Stithians with Charlie Kent (120) and Raja Hamza Waheed (122) sharing a second-wicket stand of 222 before Rob Harrison hit 5 sixes in his 29-ball 64 not out. Stithians' top eight all got into double figures in the 168 all out. Nathan Strick top scored with 27. Neil Ivamy and son Jack took three wickets each.
Penzance won a thrilling tenth WT Edwards Cup win over Callington at a sun-drenched Truro. Penzance recovered from 76 for 7 to make 129 thanks to Player of the Match Jack Paull (44) and what was to prove a crucial 14 off the last three balls by Tom Dinnis (26no). Callington, after losing three early wickets for 19, including former Gloucestershire captain Chris Dent (4), rallied with a fourth-wicket stand of 91 from Liam Lindsay (40) and Matt Thompson (52no). 72 were required from ten overs and 43 from the last five. However, the required rate continued to edge up and with 30 needed off three overs and 13 off Ben Fletcher's last it proved too much as Penzance won by seven runs.
