Saturday 75 Matches 17 Completed 56 Cancelled 2 Conceded
Sunday 1 Match 1 Completed
The final day of the Royal Cornwall Show might have been the headline cancellation on Saturday, but local cricket in the Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League had more than its fair share as well. The overnight rain continued on Saturday morning, along with the unseasonably strong winds, particularly around the coast. It was the third of six Saturdays this season to be weather-affected, with only 17 games countywide able to start, and all were delayed. A total of 56 games were cancelled.
The Premier leaders, Callington, did not travel to St Just. The covers were blown off at Cape Cornwall, which was hit by over six hours of continuous wind gusts in excess of 50mph on Saturday morning at the peak of the storm. Wadebridge have moved into second, ten points behind, after again getting the better of Penzance. The North Cornwall club won by four wickets in a 35-over game at Egloshayle. Penzance only made 106 all out, with Grant Stone top scoring with 27. They had been 32-5 with Lachlan Crump accounting for Ollie Rayner, Basil Akram and Charlie Sharland. Ryan Jackson took 3-19 from seven overs. Charlie McLachlan (29) got the home side to 56 before the second wicket fell. Ben Fletcher took 3-23 to make it 86-5, but James Turpin steadied the ship with 17 not out as Wadebridge got over the line with 21 balls to spare. Werrington have slipped to third after failing to make it three wins in a row. The game at Helston was the first to get underway, with 40 overs a side possible. Helston were dismissed for 137 with five balls remaining. Steve Jenkin made 37, but wickets tumbled around him with only Karl Leathley and Jayden Mitchell scraping into double figures. However, Bryn Evans and Ryan Tonkin added what proved to be a vital 46 for the tenth wicket. Evans hit 50 off 40 balls. Werrington hit a record 408 the previous week, but the spin of Evans accounted for county captain Paul Smith and Sri Lankan Thulina Dilshan at 56-3. Evans (3-18) and Harry Saunders (3-22) took control to bowl out the North Cornwall side for 104 with 21 balls unused.
Camborne got their third win with a victory over winless Grampound Road by seven wickets at Warrior Park. In a 33-over game, the ‘Road’ were restricted to 117-6. The MacDonald brothers, Alfie and Jacob, shared four wickets with Jacob accounting for the top scorer, Harry Phillips (49). Dinuka Dilshan (46) and Martin Jenkin (25) set up the seven-wicket victory with a stand of 76 for the second wicket. At St Austell, it was worth the wait for Redruth, who won a minimum 20-over game by three wickets in dramatic fashion. The home side made 147-7 led by skipper Alex Bone (46) and Gianluca Longo with 31. Liam Norwell took 2-14 from four overs. Ellis Whiteford and youngster Harley Stevens also took two wickets. Norwell then made 30 off 12 balls. The Reds slipped to 85-5 before Attyab Ahmad chipped in with 54, after the visitors had required 53 off the last five overs. They made it with four boundaries in the 19th over to win, with an over and three wickets to spare. Craig Williams (24no off eight balls) and Stevens (13no off six balls). The pair added 30 for the eighth wicket off only 12 balls.
In County Division One, the one game played was at Paul, who overtook the morning leaders Hayle, after winning by 167 runs. They made 260-8 in 40 overs with good contributions by Ben Brooks, Pieter Gildenhuys and Charlie Goldsworthy, who all got forties. Paul Lello made 37 for the visitors, who were dismissed for 93 in the 27th over. Damon Nicholls and Harry Friggens shared six wickets before Brooks completed a fine game with 4-15.
Stithians were in action on Sunday when they won at St Erme in the Cornwall & Devon Final of the Cawston Press Village Cup. The clubs swapped County One status this season, and Stithians confirmed their superiority with a comprehensive eight-wicket victory with over 19 overs to spare. Jack Evans (15) was the only home batter into double figures in the 77 all out. Ryan Mitchell took 4-15 with two each for Glyn Furnival and Archie Rowe. Matthew Ellis then made 46 not out to set up a last 32 tie at former National champions Goatacre in Wiltshire.
