Sunday 3 Matches 2 Completed 1 Cancelled
It was a day of mixed fortunes with the weather as an advancing Atlantic front saw matches abandoned around teatime in the west of the county while the majority of games in the east were played to a conclusion. As a result, Penzance's 14-point lead at the top of the Premier Division has been reduced to five points. Their top-of-the-table home clash with Helston was abandoned while Wadebridge had the narrowest of DLS wins at Truro to move back to second.
There was a remarkable home win for Werrington against Grampound Road that produced 670 runs. Both Sri Lankans hit a century for their respective clubs. After skipper Tom Orpe made 99 opening for the ‘Road’, Ravi Karunarthna hit 109 not out to post 333-6. John Moon then opened with 89 for Werrington, and Thulina Dilshan hit 121 in a third wicket stand of 202. As rain threatened, Ben Jenkins’ unbeaten 32 got Werrington home with two balls to spare. With Mark Taskis injured, effectively Jenkin and Jordan Dukes were the last pair, adding 28.
There was a dramatic finale at Truro, who made 223-7 against Wadebridge in fifty overs. Ted Phillips top-scored with 54. Play was abandoned after 21 overs of the Wadebridge innings, but crucially Matt Robins (40no) hit the penultimate ball for four to put the visitors ahead of the DLS Par score by just two runs.
Callington got a much-needed win as they made full use of reduced-sized boundaries to hit 13 sixes in the 351-8 against Redruth at Moores Park. Liam Lindsay led the onslaught with 80, and Xavie Clarke hit 5 sixes in his 55 off 34 balls. Craig Johnson took 4-57. The Reds replied with 220 all out, with Dulash Udayanga making 75.
An early rain shower saw Penzance’s home game with Helston reduced to 43 overs. The players were forced to leave the field in the 21st over with Penzance on 129-3 with Charlie Sharland 41 not out. The reason was that the Cornwall Air Ambulance landed on the outfield. The crew left by land ambulance to attend an incident and it was 75 minutes before the helicopter took off. By this time, the rain had set in, and that was that.
The match between St Just and St Austell at Cape Road was also reduced to 43 overs due to early rain. St Austell made 205-7 with Dan Jarman making 66 before becoming one of Ellis May’s 4-33. Gary Bone hit 36 not out. St Just were 40-4 off 12 overs when the rain set in before the 20-over DLS threshold was reached.
In County Division One, all but one of the games achieved positive results. The exception was an abandoned game at Paul who dismissed Hayle for 92. The home side might feel hard done by to have been 45-1 in nine overs chasing a revised target of 83 in 36 overs. Hayle lost ground in the title race as Beacon and Camborne both had convincing wins on the road. Beacon won by 245 runs at St Austell Seconds after making 304. Skipper Ben James hit 147 from 130 balls and then took 3-7 from six overs. Camborne bowled Newquay out for 85 with Dinuka Dilshan taking 5-15. Camborne won by seven wickets inside 15 overs to be two points behind Beacon at the two-thirds mark.
Falmouth made it three wins in four to leave St Erme without a win since the end of May. They won by five wickets at Castle Field after St Erme recovered from 7-4 to make 97. Perranporth have a 23-point cushion in fourth after winning at Roche by 16 runs. Tom Bradburn hit 64 and James Hall 35 to get from 117-6 to 182. Liam Phillips made 46 for Roche before falling to Bryn Evans who took 4-27.
In the Vingoe Family Law Andrew Cup Final at Mount Ambrose, Perranporth Seconds snatched 'defeat from the jaws of victory'. They looked to have timed their run chase perfectly in pursuit of Barripper's 148-5. They reduced the target to 27 off four overs, then 16 off the last three with seven wickets in hand. Seamer Ollie Essex then came back to bowl a match-defining 18th over, taking three wickets for one run. It left 15 to win off two overs, but only four wickets left. Skipper Archie Condie only conceded four singles off the penultimate over. It meant 11 were required off the last over but only eight were managed. Aaron Futcher was named the 'Bunny Williams' Player of the Match, after top scoring with 54 for Barripper.
Falmouth won the Mining Division Evening League for the first time when their Nighthawks team defeated Mount Hawke & Porthtowan by 49 runs.
