A day of blue skies and hot sunshine across the county, with temperatures of 27 degrees or more - the hottest day of the season to date. In the Premier Division, Penzance reinstated a 14-point lead at the top after winning at bottom club Grampound Road by 114 runs. Joint morning leaders Wadebridge suffered a six-wicket defeat at Helston. Only 13 points cover the bottom five clubs in the bid to avoid the one relegation spot.
A solid batting performance by Penzance saw them dismissed for 259 in the 47th over at Grampound Road. They were 62-3 early on but recovered with good knocks from Brad Wadlan (58), Josh Croom (50), Nic Halstead-Cleak (34) and Tommy Sturgess (31). The Road lost their first four wickets for 69 and were all out for 145 in 32 overs, with Harry Matthews top scoring with 31 not out. Wadlan and Charlie Sharland shared six wickets.
Helston moved up to second after a six-wicket home win over Wadebridge in a game that ebbed and flowed. The visitors lost regular wickets, reaching 62-6 and 93-8; however, they were rescued by a ninth-wicket stand between James Turpin (82) and Matt Lawrence (28). Ollie Black took 3-40. Requiring 171, Helston found themselves 18-3 before Karl Leathley (27) got them to 71-4. The game was then won thanks to an unbeaten century stand between Jayden Mitchell (85no) and Mark Jenkin (32no), with the win completed with eight overs to spare.
Callington’s slide down the table continued with a fourth successive loss in a remarkable game at Moores Park. Ben Ellis (6-23) took the first six wickets as St Just slumped to 48-6. Chami Edirisinghe got 21 to get them to a modest 100 all out in the 34th over. Callington also struggled, losing both openers with four on the board. Graham Wagg’s 28 got them to 46 before five wickets fell for 13 runs. Ellis May took 5-19, but it was Lewis Stephens who clinched the final wicket. The last pair of Ellis and Mo Danyaal needed six. Stephens bowled three wide balls, then Ellis hit to Justin Stephens (father) at mid-off to secure a dramatic two-run win with 24 overs unused.
Back-to-back wins for Redruth see them in fourth spot after beating Werrington by 42 runs. The Reds reached 103 before losing their third wicket, but opener Toby Stoddard dominated, scoring 90 before being dismissed seventh out at 203. An unbeaten 28 from Ellis Whiteford helped them end on 217-9, with Adam Hodgson taking 3-34. The visitors got a good start, reaching 99-2 with Sam Hockin getting 35. Thulina Dilshan made 50, but after he was fourth out at 142, the innings fell away to 185 all out as Dulash Udayanga took 5-51.
St Austell beat Truro by 47 runs at Wheal Eliza after making 218-8. Dan Jarman made 46 before Alex Bone (68) was third out at 151. Connor Cooke went on to make 51. Neil Ivamy took 4-40. Adam Price followed up his three wickets with a top score of 41. St Austell were unable to pick up the last wicket as Freddie Bose and Jack Ivamy added an unbeaten 27.
Wadebridge won the WT Edwards Cup for the first time, having lost to Troon in 1967 and Penzance in 2021. After electing to bat under blue skies at St Austell St Just suffered the early setbacks of losing Rhys Brownfield and Neil Curnow. Ellis May made 22 at a run a ball. Chami Edirisinghe (30) and Philip Nicholas (34) added 55 for the fourth wicket. From 103-3 in the 13th over it all went wrong, however, in dramatic fashion. Edirisinghe was dismissed by Elliot Dunnett and Logan Curnow was bowled next ball. Lawrence made it three wickets in three balls by trapping Nicholas lbw. Dunnett quickly removed Josh Semmens and Gareth May and ended with 4-18 to be named player of the match. Lawrence took 3-19 as the innings ended off the first ball of the 18th over at 107 all out - the last seven wickets falling for just four runs.
James Turpin hit successive boundaries in the first over, but Edirisinghe removed Matt Robins for a single in the second over. That was to be the only success for the Penwith club as Turpin and Lachlan Crump added an unbroken 102 for the second wicket. Crump made 57 not out with a six and 9 fours off 39 balls. Turpin ended on 54no off 41 balls, hitting a maximum to win the match off the first ball of the 15th over.
In County Division One, it was a day of the top five all beating the bottom five as matches went to form. Leaders Beacon won at Falmouth after hitting 298-4 with Jordan Thomas scoring an unbeaten century against his former club. Steve Wiseman and Sam James got fifties. Adrian Noott made 52 in the Falmouth reply of 207-5. Camborne are just a point behind after overwhelming the bottom side, Paul at Roskear. They hit 313-5 with Australian Josh Fontana hitting his second century of the season. The Perth batter made 122, adding 169 for the second wicket with Alfie MacDonald, who made 91. Paul were dismissed for 143.
Kyle van Rooyen hit 85 for St Erme as they were dismissed for 182 at the Towans. Hayle knocked off the runs for two wickets with 15 overs to spare to move to only six points off the top. Aizaz Ahmad made 75 and Dan Lello 65 not out. Perranporth hold on to fourth spot after beating St Austell Seconds by six wickets at Reen Manor. Needing 207, New Zealander Tom Bradburn made 107 not out. There was a close game at fifth-placed Newquay where Adam Cocking (106) hit his second consecutive home century in his side’s 211. Archie Green took 5-26 for Roche. George Oakley was last out for the visitors – run out for 77 – eleven runs short of victory.
