Peter Dingle RIP

by South Petherwin CC  Club Secretary Roger Gerry

It is with great sadness that we write to inform you of the premature passing of our Club Chairman and dear friend, Peter Dingle, aged 60.

Peter passed peacefully away on 5 June 2025  at Pendruccombe House in Launceston, with his family all around him.

Peter was diagnosed with a brain tumour in the spring of 2024, which he bravely battled and fought til the very end.

Enduring many frequent visits to Derriford Hospital for treatment, he was cared for at his home in Trelawney Cottages, Launceston by his wife Jeanette and his close family until the last few days, when he was admitted to Pendruccombe Nursing Home, just a short distance away.

Cricket played a massive part in his life, from his school days at Launceston College, then on to playing senior cricket, starting out at Launceston through his teenage years.

His first introduction to South Petherwin came in his early twenties, coinciding with Petherwin’s entry to the Cornwall Cricket League in 1988.

Peter played a great part in the club’s successful early years in the CCL, helping in many promotions.

Starting out as an off-spinner, he switched to medium pace through his twenties and thirties, then reverted to spin in later years.

He was also a more than useful lower-order batter.

He was proud to hold the club bowling record and is one of a few Cornish league cricketers to take all 10 wickets in a league match - his 10 for 60 came in a match at Tregony CC in  1990.

Peter also had a spell at Werrington CC during the noughties, during which time he trained as a league umpire and became qualified to Premier League standard.

He had a five-year spell as a league umpire, returning to South Petherwin in 2013 to continue his playing career, playing up until 2021.

As well as being Club Chairman for the past seven years, Peter also captained the Second team and was an active committee member for many years.

He carried out his Chairmanship with great dignity and respect, as well as being up for a laugh or leg-pull.

He will be missed by everyone at our club as well as many cricketing friends that he made along the way.

He leaves behind his wife Jeanette, daughters Laura & Louise, son-in-law Mark, Mum Maggie, Dad Richard, brother Simon and the apple of his eye, granddaughter Bella.
