On a day of grey skies and patchy drizzle, there was a dramatic fourth round of games in the Bond Timber Cornwall Premier, where all five home clubs lost. The last time that happened in the top flight was on 1st July 2023.
Leaders Callington lost their first game of the season. Grampound Road won for the first time, to move off the bottom. Penzance lost by just one run in a DLS game, and Redruth won by one wicket thanks to a late partnership. As a result, there is a three-way tie at the top between Callington, Redruth and Wadebridge on 61 points, and just 12 points cover the top seven.
With Mo Danyaal (5-35) reducing St Austell to 21-4 at Callington, the visitors needed a recovery and got it through in-form skipper Alex Bone (59), Thevindu Dickwella (46) and 43 not out from Gary Bone to post 181-8. With Xavie Clarke making 61 at 117-2, the home side looked on course. However, Andrew Libby (4-27), Michael Bone (3-40) and Gary Bone with 1-16 from ten overs had other ideas. Ben Ellis hit a late six but was the last man out caught in the deep to leave St Austell winners by six runs with two balls remaining.
It was just as dramatic at Penzance, where, after three fine and warm weekends, the weather had its say with rain causing an abandonment after 36.2 overs of the second innings. The Wadebridge innings of 242-9 was anchored by Matt Rowe (85), with 95 being added for the fifth wicket thanks to a hard-hit 70 from Callum Wilson, off 46 balls, which included 4 sixes. Just as at St Austell on the opening day, Penzance conceded six penalty runs due to a slow over rate, which arguably again cost them the game. They reached 80 without loss but lost Christian Purchase for 54 with Elliot Dunnett taking 4-49 as they slipped to 142-6. Grant Stone and Josh Croom steadied the ship, but when play was interrupted, they were one run behind the DLS par score and were unable to get back onto the field.
It was just as tense at Truro, where Redruth, requiring 169, slipped to 89-6 and 124-8 with Freddie Bose taking 4-43. Then Peter Howells made 42 with skipper Piran Kent 22no to level the scores with a ninth-wicket stand of 44. Howells was dismissed by former Red Luke Johnson (3-26), but his brother Craig got the winning run with eight balls to spare. Seven batters got double figures for Truro led by opener Harry Phillips with 32. Craig Johnson took 3-31.
Grampound Road got off the mark with a great batting display at St Just to make 290 after Ben Stevens removed openers Jack Mingo and Antony Angove for only 23. Alex Lean (81) and Tom Orpe (64) added 129 for the third wicket, and Harry Gregory (37) and Ravi Karunarathna (60) added 83 for the fifth wicket. Chami Edirisinghe cleaned up the tail, taking 5-60. Neil Curnow made 65 for the hosts, but 132-4 became 154 all out in the 40th over with Nathan Keevil and Angove sharing six wickets.
Helston won at Werrington, where a rain delay after six overs of the first innings reduced the match to 46 overs. Helston had already lost Dan Jenkin, Billy Taylor and Lewis Goldsworthy and Steve Jenkin followed soon after the resumption at 32-4. It was a new overseas player, Jayden Mitchell, who played the key innings. The Australian went on to make 95 on his debut, hitting 9 sixes and 6 fours off 62 balls. Sunny Osmont made 38 to help add 94 for the sixth wicket before Harry Saunders (26) and Ryan Tonkin (21) got the total to 229 all out in the 42nd over. Dan Barnard and Adam Hodgson took three wickets. With a reduced DLS target of 226, the home side got to 103-1 with Sam Hockin (50) and Adam Hodgson (34) adding 95 for the second wicket after the early loss of John Moon. The innings fell away to 190 all out in the 40th over, with all six Helston bowlers in the wickets led by Ryan Tonkin’s 3-49.
In County Division One, Hayle made it four wins on the bounce, beating bottom side Roche by six wickets at Tresaise Road. After Liam Brignull fell for 47,the home side recovered from 119-7 to reach 187-9 in fifty overs. Jason Williams (38) and Stewart May (30) added 58 for the eighth wicket. After being 65-3, Tom Sharp (91no) steered Hayle home with over 16 overs to spare. Camborne are second after winning at St Austell Seconds by 210 runs. Opener Josh Fontana made 104 and Dinuka Dilshan 73 in the 287-7. Dilshan then took 5-31 to end proceedings in the 22nd over.
An understrength Beacon were dismissed for 142 at St Erme, having been 33-5 and 97-8. Tom James made 30, and the tail all got double figures after Kyle van Rooyen (4-24) knocked over the top order. St Erme were dismissed for 118 with Gareth Mankee (4-29) taking early and late wickets. As with Camborne and Beacon, there was a third win for Newquay, who beat neighbours Perranporth by 21 runs at the Sports Centre. Toby Chillingworth got 65 in Newquay’s 174 with Ty Murrell taking three wickets. After Harry Watkins made 40, Perranporth got to 134-4 before losing their last six wickets for 19 runs. Chillingworth completed a great game with figures of 10-5-13-3.
Just as at Penzance, the rain arrived at neighbouring Paul in the 37th over, and it was Falmouth that benefited with a narrow four-run success on DLS. Falmouth had been bowled out for 163 with skipper Aidan Carter unbeaten on 45. Just before the rain came, Paul crucially lost Damon Nicholls for 32 and Andrew Snell for 30 to fall behind on DLS at 139-8, four runs short of the 37 over par score..
