Reigning Bond Timber Cornwall Premier Champions Penzance lost both games to Callington last season but laid a marker for 2025 with a 57-run win at Moores Park. It was Callington’s first defeat of the season. Drizzle meant a seventy-minute delayed start with the match reduced to 39 overs. Mo Danyaal struck two early blows, removing Jack Paull and Nic Halstead-Cleak, but Christian Purchase (52) and Brad Wadlan put together a match-defining partnership of 122 for the third wicket. Wadlan went on to dominate the innings, ending on 100 not out with 14 fours off 121 balls. Needing 205, the home side lost Max Tryfonos and Xavier Clarke for only a single. Aidan Libby followed, and at 23-3 off nine overs, skipper Graham Wagg was forced to retire with a hand injury. Liam Lindsay fell for 27 at 51-6 before Danyaal hit an unbeaten 49 to gain a second batting point. With almost four overs remaining and light fading after eight o’clock, the umpires abandoned the game with Penzance comfortable winners by 57 runs on the DLS Method.
Meanwhile, Redruth and Wadebridge both won to continue to share the top spot. Helston lost wickets regularly at Redruth, with only Sunny Osmont getting to 20 in their 101 all out in the 39th over. Justin Beaton picked up a couple of late wickets to end with 3-32. After losing both openers for 14, the Reds didn’t have it all their own way but were seen home by Elliot Stoddard (26) and an unbeaten 25 from Lloyd Brock. Victory by four wickets came in the 31st over, Jayden Mitchell took 3-41.
There was a game of swaying fortunes at Cape Road where Wadebridge eventually defeated St Just by three wickets with 11 balls to spare. Charlie Hawken (3-22) reduced the home side to 8-4, but Philip Nicholas (46) and Chami Edirisinghe (64) rallied to add 116 for the fifth wicket. The spin of Matt Robins removed both, and he went on to take 4-34 in the 170 all out. The visitors found themselves 27-3 and 88-6 after Matt Rowe and James Turpin hit twenties. The decisive partnership came with a stand of 74 for the seventh wicket. Promoted to the first team for the first time this year, Alex Forward made 51 not out and was supported by skipper Kelvin Snell with 34. Ellis May took 3-32.
St Austell enjoyed an eight-wicket home win over Grampound Road with 23 overs to spare. The ‘Road’ slipped to 47-4 before Ravi Karunarathna made 54 to get them to 125. Young Ben Sleeman did early damage and ended with 4-27. Openers Thevindu Dickwella (33) and Connor Cooke (45) laid a sound foundation before Dan Jarman’s 30 not-out wrapped up proceedings.
Werrington’s home win over Truro was similarly emphatic, with the seven-wicket victory achieved with 24 overs remaining at Ladycross. Truro’s top seven all got double figures, but only skipper Charlie Kent (27) passed the 20-mark. Adam Hodgson wrapped the innings up, taking 5-27 as the last five wickets fell for 14 runs. John Moon (33) and Thulina Dilshan (61no) virtually decided the issue, putting on 63 for the third wicket. The win took the North Cornwall club off the foot of the table.
Hayle remain unbeaten at the top of County Division 1 with Tom Sharp making the difference at Perranporth. The former county captain top scored with 35 in what appeared a modest 132 all out. Ty Murrell took 3-28. Steve Richards (4-22) took four early wickets to set the home side back before Sharp ended matters in quick time, taking 6-19 from 5.2 overs. At one stage, Falmouth were 32-7 and 55-8 at second-placed Camborne before Perran Burley’s 42 saw the hundred up. Dinuka Dilshan took 3-4 from five overs. Needing 105 opener Dan Stephens hit an unbeaten 47 to gain a seven-wicket win in the 24th over.
Third-placed Beacon batted well at Roche, posting 256-6. After Ben James made 75, Jack Thomas went on to hit 82. Roche recovered from 45-4 to end on 225 all out in the 42nd over, thanks to Liam Brignull’s 87. Callum Edgcombe took 3-42. Paul hit 239-7 at home to St Austell Seconds with opener Kameron Collins laying the base with 74 and Ross Williams, Will Trenoweth and Damon Nicholls all passing thirty. The Saints replied with 151 all out in 40 overs. James Carter scored 31 with Nicholls completing a good day with 4-47.
The closest game came at Newquay, where St Erme came away victorious by just nine runs. They only had 109 to defend after Alfie Rhodes and Rob Burton shared the first six wickets with only 52 on the board. Number ten, Shane Tangye, made what proved to be a crucial 24. Needing 14 to win, Adam Jenkin (25) was ninth out for the home team to effectively end their hopes. Kyle Van Rooyen and Spencer Wilcock shared six wickets.
