The Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League season began under blue skies and the warmest May Bank Holiday Saturday for years. The Premier Division got off to a dramatic start with champions Penzance losing at St Austell for the third successive season in the Premier, to add to an  Edwards Cup Final defeat. After conceding a six-run penalty due to a slow over-rate, Penzance lost the game by just three runs. Sensationally, they lost their last four wickets for 11 runs. Adam Snowdon took the final two wickets in successive balls with two overs to spare. Earlier Nic Halstaed-Cleak (40) and Charlie Sharland (43) made promising league debuts. St Austell were 95-5 but new skipper Alex Bone made an unbeaten 79 and added 100 for the sixth wicket with brother Gary, who made 58, to get the total to 222-7. Tom Dinnis took 3-41. Redruth and Wadebridge are the early-season leaders after taking maximum points. At Redruth Premier history was probably made with St Just fielding a team that included four fathers and sons. Gareth May, Neil Curnow, Justin Stephens and Mark Waters were joined by sons Ellis, Logan, Lewis and Haydn respectively. Justin Stephens, who last played for St Just in 2019, top-scored with 40. Ellis Whiteford took 4-28 and newcomer Justin Beaton 4-38 in the 172 all out. Redruth overseas player Dulash Udayanga made an unbeaten fifty, and returning Lloyd Brock was 30 not out in an unbeaten fifth wicket stand of 68 to secure a six-wicket success.

At Grampound Road, it was a case of “welcome back to the Premier” for the home side as Wadebridge secured a 99-run victory. That was thanks to an incredible innings from James Turpin, who hit 9 sixes and 10 fours in his 137. Requiring 264, the Road ended exactly 100 short. Dave Hoskings, who missed last season, opened with 54 and keeper Harry Gregory hit 50. Spin did for the home side with Matt Robins (4-13) and Matt Lawrence (3-38) doing much of the damage. In the East Cornwall derby, Callington ran out four-wicket winners at home to Werrington. Opener John Moon made 55 for the visitors in their 132 with Mohammad Danyall taking 4-36. Liam Lindsay hit 32 for the hosts before being bowled by Adam Hodgson, who went on to take 4-22 from ten overs. Number eight Ben Ellis hit an unbeaten 16 to see Callington over the line. At Helston, the home side made 178 against  Truro. Opener Billy Taylor held the top order together with 59. Rob Harrison took 3-28 from ten overs. After being 2-2, skipper Charlie Kent made 23 and new overseas Akhilesh Sahani  19. However, a fourth-wicket stand of 83 decided the issue, with Ted Phillips making 68 and Adam Price 51. Truro won by three wickets with 14 overs to spare.

In County Division 1, there was a dream start for Perranporth in their debut in the County Divisions. They hit 302-7 at home to St Erme with Cameron Bishop making 112. Travis Woolston made 69 before taking 5-26 in the 159-run success. The other promoted team, St Austell Seconds, lost by four wickets at Falmouth. Ryan Bennetts made 45 for the visitors, but Freddie Aycliffe hit 51 for the home side on debut. The champions, Beacon, suffered an opening day defeat at Hayle, for whom former county skipper Tom Sharp hit 111 in their 221-9. Beacon were dismissed for 96. Camborne made short work of Roche, winning by nine wickets at Roskear with Sri Lankan Dinuka Dilshan taking 3-9 from ten overs on debut. Aussie Toby Chillingworth made telling contributions in Newquay’s 32-run home win over Paul, making 49 and taking 3-40. Kieran Bowden was unfortunate to be on the losing side after making 73 and taking 3-30.
