The County Division One title race will be the centre of attention of the final full day of Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League action on Saturday. The Premier League title has been retained by Penzance and the winning margin might be as many as 60 points or more ahead of Truro depending on the final day results. Penzance received the trophy after their final home game last Saturday against St Just. They won the game in style making 266-7 led by Christian Purchase with 104 followed by Greg Smith’s 72. Ben Ellis took 3-55. Neil Curnow continued his fine season with 68 as the visitors made 194 all out in the 45th over. It is the 24th time Penzance have been crowned County Champions.  They are followed by Camborne (17), Truro (13) and St Just (11). The sixth occasion was exactly 100 years ago when they beat Liskeard by 24 runs in the East v West play-off.

Truro lost at Redruth by three wickets after being dismissed for 122 with three wickets each for county slow bowlers Craig Johnson and Ellis Whiteford. Sam Wyatt’s 49no saw Redruth home despite Neil Ivamy’s 4-9. There were two centuries at Grampound Road where Camborne’s Chris Gibson made 129 in their 268-6. Virendra Yadav made 102 in the response of 204-7. Wadebridge beat Callington by 123 runs with Charlie Ellis helping bowl the visitors out for 113 with 4-18. James Turpin made 52 in Wadebridge’s 236-8.  St Austell recovered from 5-3 to post 197-9 at Werrington thanks to fifties from Hugh Parkinson and Dan Jarman. Dan Barnard returned to end with 5-30. Werrington were 65-5 but Ben Jenkin’s 80 not out secured the four wicket victory with 15 balls to spare.

Hayle need a maximum of 15 points to take the County One title ahead of Helston. They host Newquay on Saturday while Helston finish at home to St Austell seconds. Helston took it to the final day with a six-wicket victory at Newquay. The home side were bowled out for 192 with Michael Harding (62) and Grant Stone (44) adding 94 for the fourth wicket. With a rare failure for Karl Leathley and brother Guy also going cheaply, at 13-2 there was work to do. However, any thoughts of an upset were ended with Dan Jenkin (69) and Ross Leathley (66) adding 169 for the third wicket. Both were dismissed at 182 but the victory soon followed by six wickets in only 32 overs. Hayle collapsed from 121-1 to 178 all out at home to Redruth seconds after Matt Lello made 58. Joe Clifton-Griffiths took 4-17. Tom Sharp followed up his 40 with 6-21 to bowl the visitors out for 107.

A superb innings of 175 not out by Stefan Churcher was the highlight of Falmouth’s win at bottom of the table Gorran. He came to the crease at 37-2 and was unbeaten as Falmouth racked up 315 all out with seven balls to spare. He hit 9 sixes and 20 fours off 117 balls.  James Tomlinson made 65 in the Gorran reply of 151. St Austell seconds finally got off the mark with a seven run win over Werrington seconds with Scott Barrott top scoring with 44 and taking 3-27. At St Erme Jack Evans made 104no and took three wickets in the 39 run win over Paul.

Elsewhere nine titles have been decided with four going to the final day. As well as County Division 1 Callington seconds need a maximum of three points to claim Division 2 East. Callington thirds need seven points maximum in Division 3 East and Stithians seconds need just a point to be assured Division 5 West.  Mullion, Camborne seconds and Perranporth seconds wrapped up their titles last weekend to add to Penzance, Hayle seconds, Luckett, Liskeard, St Just fourths and Holsworthy seconds.

The venues for the five County Finals on 18 September are:  (2) Lanhydrock, (3) Veryan, (4) St Gluvias or Pencarrow, (5) St Stephen, (6) Pencarrow or St Gluvias.
