Penzance still have a 40 point lead at the top of the Bond Timber Cornwall Premier League but they were made to work at St Austell, who fought well before going down to a fifth successive defeat. Antony Angove made 69 as Penzance ended on 224-7 in a full 50 overs. A rain shower at the close of the innings meant the St Austell D/L target was 216 from 46 overs. Dan Jarman made 61, on his seasonal debut, and with Gary Bone getting 48 not out the Saints ended on a creditable 197-6. At Truro two of the county’s promising youngsters both hit centuries. Joe Phillips made 123 in the Truro total of 254-8 with Scott Harvey scoring 59. In reply, Chris Gibson hit 120 as Camborne made a worthy 233. Another one for the future, Sam Wyatt, steered Redruth to a win over Werrington at Trewirgie, Needing 152 the Reds were 42-4 and 90-5 before Wyatt (61no) and Luke Johnson (35no) calmed the home nerves. Kelvin Snell made 75no helping Wadebridge to 202-8 at St Just with Chamikara Edirisinghe taking four wickets. Gareth May (72) and Neil Curnow (59no) saw St Just to a two-wicket victory. Elliot Dunnett took four wickets. Callington made 238 at home to Grampound Road with Luke Brenton top-scoring with 73. Rob Mutch made 35 before taking 4-26 to bowl the Road out for 91.

In County Division 1 the leaders Hayle hit 357-7 at Lanhydrock with Tom Sharp turning back the clock to make 107 not out and getting good support from Wayne Jenkin (72) and Marc Sweeney with 67. Lanhydrock were bowled out for 215. The Leathley brothers, Guy (72) and Karl (65) led Helston to 268 at Werrington and a 169 run victory. Falmouth’s hopes of an immediate return to the Premier League suffered another setback at home to Beacon for whom twins Ben James (115) and Sam (60no) dominated in the 267-5. Falmouth made 138 with Adrian Noott carrying his bat for 55. Joe Crane made 68 for Newquay in their 136 at the Sports Centre but Redruth seconds won by six wickets. Andrew Snell hit 102 for Paul at home to St Austell seconds in the 198 all out. Matt Lawrence and Kieran Bowden shared eight wickets as St Austell reached 160. Gorran only mustered 114 at home to St Erme and lost by nine wickets.

Cornwall's cricketers had the most memorable of days when they beat a Somerset XI at the County Ground, Taunton in a first NCCA Showcase fixture. In the 50 over game Somerset, preparing for their Royal London Cup campaign were bowled out for 260 with Cornishman Lewis Goldsworthy making 59. Rob Mutch took 4 for 30 on debut. Cornwall responded superbly to reach 263 for 5 with 22 balls to spare. Skipper Scott Harvey made a county best 93 not out and Truro teammate Charlie Kent hit 60 as Cornwall reached 149 before losing their second wicket. Kent and Ollie Westbury had put on 77 for the first wicket in 16 overs before being parted. England's Test Spinner Jack Leach took one for 33 from 10 overs. The game was played in 30-degree heat. Eight of the Somerset team went on to defeat Derbyshire in the RL Cup opener on Sunday with Goldsworthy hitting 57 not out in his List A debut. Cornwall return to NCCA Championship action on Sunday with a three-day game against Devon at Truro (11am). Cornwall drew their opening game with Wales NC. Taunton – Somerset 260 (GW Thomas 68, LP Goldsworthy 59, BGF Green 32, SJ Young 23, KL Aldridge 21; RG Mutch 4-30, CM Johnson 2-30) lost to Cornwall 263-5 (SA Harvey 93no, CJ Kent 60, SP Kellow 28, OE Westbury 26; KL Aldridge 2-54) by five wickets.

Penzance won a fourth successive Bradley’s Vinter Cup beating Helston by 92 runs at a sundrenched Camborne, with the temperature in the eighties. Christian Purchase made 83 before being dismissed by Brad Bury with six overs remaining. It included 6 sixes and 7 fours in 44 balls. Purchase and Tom Wells (20) put on 68 for the first wicket in eight overs. Dan Lello's 54 came off 35 balls with 3 sixes and 5 fours. The 181-4 was the third-highest total in a final only bettered by Penzance’s 249-3 against St Just in 2018 and the 184-5 versus Falmouth a year later. Will Eva, Brad Bury, Gavin Tregenza and Steve Jenkin took a wicket apiece. Helston were dismissed for 89 with Purchase picking up 3 for 24. They lost half the side for 38 with Giles Lawrence and Jonny Ludlam picking up two wickets each after Tom Dinnis got the early breakthrough, bowling Dan Jenkin in the third over. Opener Karl Leathley batted through to the 16th over before being dismissed by Purchase for 30 off 46 balls.

Wadebridge ended a 54-year wait to win the Clive Rosevear Insurance Hawkey Cup at St Austell after a thrilling final in front of a good crowd on a balmy evening. It's the fifth time the club has won the trophy. St Austell had early setbacks losing Mike Bone and Matt Ellison to Callum Wilson. James Carter made 25 and Alex Bone hit 39 before being fifth out at 95. Wadebridge were excellent in the field and restricted the Saints to 138-9. Scott Barrott made 21 and Curtis Dalby (19no) got useful late runs. Wilson came back to end with 3-19 and Matt Robins took 3-19. Liam Watson removed Matt Butler for 16 and Adam Snowdon had dangerman Robins caught and bowled cheaply. When Gary Bone (2-15) picked up the wickets of Kelvin Snell and Jamie Beare at 64-4 in the ninth over it was ‘game on’. Opener James Turpin proved to be the match-winner and went on to make 75no off 50 balls with 5 sixes and 3 fours to win the ‘Tris Bax’ Player of the Match. Skipper Wilson made a valuable 20 before being run out with 15 required off three overs Turpin finished the match with an over to spare by hitting a six over long-on.
