Under overcast but warm conditions the second half of the Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League season got underway with the top two teams in the Premier clashing at Penzance. Following their record-breaking Britannia Inn Hawkey Final success in the week, when Chris Dent hit 126 in the 201-4 against St Austell, Callington’s top order were reduced to 65-4. Matt Thompson (66) and Jake Rowe (51) added 99 for the fifth wicket as they recovered to 195-7. Basil Akram’s 87 not out then steered Penzance home by six wickets with nine overs to spare. Charlie Sharland made 33. Penzance are the new leaders and only nine points cover the top four teams with eight to play.

Wadebridge are only six points behind after hitting 279-5 at Redruth. Lachlan Crump made 68 and Charlie McLachlan and James Turpin got fifties.  Redruth were unable to repeat the previous week’s successful run chase as they slipped to 139 all out. Ethan Best made 35, but from 88-1, the Redruth innings fell to the spin of Matt Robins, who took 5-28. Werrington’s good season rolled on with an impressive batting display at Grampound Road hitting 335-4. Opener John Moon scored 158 off 147 balls and added 195 for the second wicket with Mark Gribble (83). The Road were bowled out for 186 in the 40th over with Tom Orpe making 57.

Helston had a remarkable last-ball victory at St Austell by one run. Requiring 177, St Austell looked all but home as the ninth-wicket pair of Alex Bone and Andrew Libby took the score from 141 to three needed for victory off Ryan Tonkin’s final over. Following a dot ball, Bone took a single. Two dot balls followed, then Libby (19) was caught by Gavin Tregenza. With Liam Watson needing a single for a tie off the last ball, Bone (66) was run out by Billy Taylor. Earlier, Lewis Stephens (35) top-scored for Helston with Dan Jenkin, Jayden Mitchell and Mark Jenkin getting twenties. Camborne, had a four-wicket home victory over St Just. After the early loss of Scott Harvey and Neil Curnow, St Just made 175-8 with Ellis May hitting 63. Camborne openers Dinuka Dilshan (32) and Matt Hewitt (36) added 56 before wickets tumbled to 125-5, but skipper Alfie MacDonald completed a couple of fine days. Having made 107 not out for Cornwall in the Showcase game with Somerset the previous day, he hit a match-winning 41 not out to add to his three wickets.
