The Bond Timber Cornwall League has reached the halfway mark. Following a week of extreme heat, a ten-degree drop in temperatures provided just about perfect conditions. The Premier leaders, Callington, lost for the first time as Werrington avenged their recent Hawkey Cup semi-final defeat to win at Ladycross by 19 runs. The home side got to 139-1 with John Moon (60) and Mark Gribble (63) adding 126 for the second wicket. Mo Danyaal and Liam Lindsay took three wickets each, but Ben Smeeth made a valuable 43 not out to get up to 237-9. After losing Lindsay and Aidan Libby for15, Callington got to 119-2 with Matt Thompson and Chris Dent getting half centuries. Wickets tumbled to reduce the visitors to 173-7 before Matt Whalley hit 8 fours and a six in his 59. To the home delight, the end came at 218 with spinners Smeeth and Paul Smith sharing six wickets.
Penzance took advantage with a third straight win to move within six points of the leaders ahead of their clash at St Clare on Saturday. Penzance made 258-9 at home to St Austell. After losing Jack Paull at 27, Basil Akram made 92 before being sixth out at 194. Sammy King hit 41 in a fifth-wicket stand of 93. Liam Watson and Connor Cooke took three wickets each. Cooke then made 44, but on his dismissal at 100-5, the innings fell away to 154 all out in 34 overs with Ben Fletcher taking 4-27. Wadebridge are third, 14 points off the pace, but they had a close call at Camborne. Wadebridge’s 243-7 was based on Matt Robins opening with 67. Charlie McLachlan (39) and Matt Rowe (30) helped get the total to 126-1 at one stage. Dinuka Dilshan dominated the top of the Camborne innings with 81. It got down to 21 needed off the last two overs and 11 off the last. Liam Weeks was then crucially bowled for 61. With three needed off the final ball, Elliot Dunnett bowled Jordan Harvey to clinch a two-run success.
Redruth made it three wins in four as they chased down St Just’s 273-6 to win by six wickets with an over to spare at the Cornwall Electrical Park. Scott Harvey all but batted through the St Just innings to make 119. Ellis Whiteford got the Reds’ reply off to a good start, hitting 52 before Attyab Ahmad made an unbeaten 126 off 114 balls, timing the chase perfectly. Redruth move up to fifth, 38 points off the pace. Grampound Road narrowed the gap at the bottom to only six points following a second win in three games. Helston were bowled out for 140. Opener Karl Leathley, in only his second game of the season, made 39 but got little support as he was seventh out at 82 in only the twentieth over. The tail wagged with youngsters Bryn Evans (21) and Lewis Stephens (35) adding 47 for the eighth wicket. Requiring 141, Tom Orpe’s 59 not out saw his side to a six-wicket win with 16 overs to spare. Jayden Mitchell took 3-29. Helston’s opponents in next Wednesday’s Bradleys Vinter Cup Final will be Penzance, who beat St Just by 37 runs on Monday evening. Penzance will break St Just’s record by playing in a tenth successive Vinter Cup Final.
In County Division One, the leaders, Hayle, won at Stithians emphatically by nine wickets in the thirteenth over. The home side recovered from 21-4 to make 144 with nine balls unused. Aizaz Ahmad then made short work of the reply, hammering 5 sixes and 13 fours in his 110 not out off 43 balls. Paul remains a point behind after also taking maximum points at Roche, who were bowled out for 151. Will Trenoweth took 4-32. James Cole made an unbeaten 41. Ben Brooks hit 67 not out as Paul won by seven wickets in the 32nd over. Truro’s winning run was extended to five games after beating Luckett by nine wickets. Charlie Kent removed the top four batters before making 44 not out, sharing an unbroken stand of 86 with Raja Hamza Waheed, who hit 57no. Jordan Thomas was promoted to open the innings for Beacon in the absence of the James brothers and batted through, making an unbeaten 103 off 137 balls in the 254-5. Newquay, who are yet to win, were dismissed for 117 after Ryan Clark knocked over the top three for 27. Falmouth’s losing run continued with a 47-run defeat at Perranporth. A fine spell of 4-13 from Callum Stephens wrapped up the Perranporth innings at 161, with the last six wickets falling for 54 runs. Opener Henry Stephenson made 34. In the reply, Freddie Ayliffe made 24, but from 94-5, four wickets fell for ten runs, with the end coming at 114.
