Sunday 1 Match 1 Completed
A full Bond Timber Cornwall League programme was played out in sunshine following a week of persistent low cloud, fog and drizzle. Arguably, the match of the day in the Premier Division was the clash of the bottom two at St Just, where Grampound Road were the visitors. The fog of recent days cleared Cape Cornwall and allowed the home team to make 184 all out off the penultimate ball of the innings. It was the senior batters that got double figures with Neil Curnow (34) and Scott Harvey (35) putting on 78 for the first wicket before Chami Edirisinghe (43) and Gareth May (37) added 84 for the sixth wicket. Tom Fox Dean (4-28) removed the top four in the order. Antony Angove (35) and Tom Orpe added 41 for the ‘Road’s’ first wicket before the innings fell away to 115 all out in the 45th over. May took 4-12. For drama, look no further than the top of the table clash at Wadebridge, where Werrington’s Dan Barnard and Sam Hockin (3-23) reduced the home side to 25-4 and 65-6. However, opener Lachlan Crump stood firm and went on to make 106 with skipper Kelvin Snell (42) adding 110 for the seventh wicket. Barnard (4-24) returned to take two late wickets as the home side just missed a fourth batting point on 196 all out with two balls to spare. Having been 64-3, Werrington recovered to 124 with Thulina Dilshan (22) and Paul Smith (35) going well before the innings collapsed with five wickets falling for two runs. Crump (3-7) was the instigator, along with Matt Lawrence (4-29), as the visitors crashed to 139 all out with over 15 overs unused.
The leaders, Callington, comfortably beat Redruth by 148 runs at Moores Park after making 237-9. Liam Lindsay anchored the innings with 105 before being caught and bowled by Harley Stevens (3-40) at 209-4. Redruth started well at 46-2 but fell away to 89 all out in the 29th over. Toby Whiteford was dismissed for 43 as the last six wickets fell for only four runs as spinner Matt Whalley took 5-21. Penzance are up to second, eighteen points off the pace, following a 34 run victory at Helston. Skipper Christian Purchase got his second fifty of the season in an 80-run opening stand. He was one of three quick wickets for Lewis Stephens (3-41). Grant Thomson (37) helped get the total to 177-7 before Alex Ridd hit 40 not out to set a 216 target. Helston lost Billy Taylor, Steve and Dan Jenkin to Tom Dinnis for 34. Jayden Mitchell made 36 , but the innings slipped to 123-7 before Mark Jenkin (45) and Stephens (31) got the total to 181 with eleven balls unused.
After four successive defeats, St Austell overtook Camborne in mid-table after winning by 36 runs at Wheal Eliza. Rowen Taplin made 60 of the first 79 runs before Alex Bone (43) and Nadeera Balasuriya (48) helped get the total to 216-9. Dinuka Dilshan took 3-26 from his ten overs. He then made 36, but from 66-1 Camborne collapsed, losing four wickets for 15 runs. Liam Weeks made a defiant 59, but the innings petered out at 180-9.
In County Division One, Hayle lead Paul by a point at the top after beating Roche by 126 runs at the Towans. Bailey Hosemans opened with 60 in the 197, with Tommy Blake picking up 4-41. Matt Lello and Max Jenkin took three wickets each as Roche subsided to 71 all out. Paul beat Beacon by 104 runs. Jordan Thomas took 3-19 from ten overs as the home side posted 201-9. The Beacon reply saw Will Trenoweth remove Ben and Sam James at the top of the innings. Stephen Wiseman hit 29 in the 97 all out with Ben Brooks and Keiran Bowden sharing eight wickets. Falmouth suffered a home defeat in the derby against Stithians by 75 runs. Stithians were 9-2 after Haydn Ayres (3-38) struck twice and opener Simon Danby (23no) retired, to return at the fall of the eighth wicket. Nathan Strick (31) and former Falmouth player Perran Burley (29) added 69 for the fifth wicket. Needing 181, the home side slipped to 22-4 thanks to Ryan Mitchell’s 3-10. Freddie Ayliffe (57) and Charlie Baker (23) recovered before the last six wickets crashed for just 15 runs. Callum Martin (4-25) was chiefly responsible. Truro’s Neil Ivamy took 6-10 from nine overs to reduce his former club, Newquay, to 68 all out at the Sports Centre. Raja Hamza Waheed then made short work of a nine-wicket win. He hit an unbeaten 54 off 19 balls that included smashing the last four balls of the match for six. Luckett got their first win after Luke Brenton (64), Ryan Brown (59) and Leoin Cole (44) starred in their 242 at the Chapel Field against Perranporth, who were bowled out for 108. Brenton and Cole shared eight wickets.
On Sunday, Cornwall’s cricketers won both their T20 games against Herefordshire at Eastnor to qualify for the Knock Out stages in August, with two games to spare. In the first game, requiring 101 they won by seven wickets with over five overs to spare. It was closer second around as Cornwall, needing 142, recovered from 79 for 6 to win by three wickets with only four balls to spare.
Elsewhere, there was disappointment for Stithians in the National Village Cup last 32. They lost in Wiltshire by 106 runs to former champions Goatacre, who hit 67 off the last three overs to post 275-8
