Week four of the Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League saw a full programme completed with some welcome warm and dry weather across the county.
Callington are setting the early pace in the Premier Division and notched up a third consecutive win to remain the only unbeaten team. They won at Helston by 178 runs after a solid batting display led by former Gloucestershire skipper Chris Dent. He hit 6 sixes and 8 fours in his 92. With support from fellow newcomers Matt Thompson (32) and Matt Whalley (24),the visitors posted 256, with Harry Saunders picking up three late wickets. Helston lost their first four wickets for 12, with Mo Danyall and Ben Ellis sharing the wickets. Jayden Mitchell (28) and Gavin Tregenza (26no) were the only batters into double figures in the 78 all out in 23 overs. Whalley took 5-15. Werrington are second after a fine eight-wicket success at St Austell, who were restricted to 161 all out in 47 overs. Dan Barnard set the tone, taking 2-21 from ten overs. Alex Bone hit 44 and Curtis Dalby 36. In reply, Adam Hodgson made 41 before Mark Gribble (48no) and Thulina Dilshan (40no) won the game with an unbroken third wicket stand of 85. There was a fine game at Wadebridge, who hit 255-6 against St Just, but the visitors ended on a valiant 243-7 in reply. The home side got to 168-2 thanks to Charlie McLachlan (59), Lachlan Crump (43) and Matt Rowe with 58. Chamikara Edirisinghe took 4-36. Neil Curnow then made 87, and his son Logan hit three sixes in an unbeaten 38 as the Penwith side just fell short. Kiwi Ryan Jackson took 3-37. Penzance gave a debut to South African first-class all-rounder Grant Thomson in the home game with Grampound Road, for whom Ravi Karunarathna hit 73 in the 215 all out. Ben Fletcher took 4-33. Jack Paull anchored the home reply with 92 before Thomson’s unbeaten 26 secured a four-wicket win with 17 balls to spare. Ben Sleeman’s 3-50 included bowling Christian Purchase with the third ball of the innings. Camborne had to dig deep to record a narrow two-wicket success in the derby at home to Redruth. With Dan Stephens taking 4-28, the Reds were 75-7 at one stage but recovered to 149 thanks to Liam Norwell (24), Ethan Best (23) and Dom Batchelor (19no). Josh Fontana top scored with 30 in the Camborne reply, and at 132-4 the contest looked over, but Attyab Ahmad (4-18) created late drama as victory came in the 41st over.
In County Division One, leaders Hayle overwhelmed Newquay as the hosts were dismissed for 79 with Tom Sharp’s 5-8 bringing a swift conclusion to the innings. Dan Lello then hit 33 in the seven-wicket success. Unbeaten Paul won by 41 runs at Falmouth. Opener Will Trenoweth made 43 before Kieran Bowden was ninth out for 41. Needing 198, young Falmouth opener Harry Philpott made 50, but the last five wickets fell for 16 runs. Stithians made the long trek to Luckett for a first-ever League meeting. Ryan Edwards made 78 and Nathan Strick 47no in their 269-7. Ryan Mitchell took four wickets to see the hosts bowled out for 180, with opener Luke Brenton making 83. Beacon had Truro struggling at 111-5 at Boscawen Park, but the home side recovered to 235-8 with Rob Harrison hitting 40 late in the innings. Opener Charlie Kent made 40. Beacon were bowled out for 138 with Dan Mellor (34) and Ryan Clark (29) the main contributors. James Webber took 6-22 to bowl Roche out for 75 at Perranporth. Travis Woolston then hammered 41 not out off 20 balls to secure a nine-wicket win in just six overs.
On Sunday, Perranporth lost to St Erme in the Cornwall & Devon Village Cup Group semi-final by four wickets despite Travis Woolston making 83 . In the other semi-final, Stithians beat Mullion by 190 runs, with Matt Ellis making 91.
