The penultimate weekend of the Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League season was again played under blue skies and warm sunshine – the fifth in a row with groundskeepers struggling to cope with an increasingly dry summer. It was a day of dramatic twists and turns in the Premier Division, with neither promotion nor relegation decided, which sets up an intriguing final day with the added caveat that the weather is due to break down.

Penzance started the day knowing a win would probably secure the title, against bottom club Truro, at St Clare. Having put the visitors in at 46-5 in the first hour, it looked a formality. However, fighting for their lives, Truro had other ideas as Akhilesh Sahani (120) and Adam Price (53) added 150 for the sixth wicket. The visitors ended on 279 all out with two balls to spare. Tommy Sturgess and Mehran Sanwal shared eight wickets. The home side had only ten fielders for much of the innings after Tom Dinnis hobbled off with a calf injury after opening the bowling for just three overs. Penzance then lost five wickets for 79. That became 182-9 before a remarkable last wicket stand of 58  with Dinnis, literally on one leg, hitting all 58 runs with 4 sixes and 7 fours. Scott Kellow took his third wicket to seal a Truro win by 39 runs and maximum points with 15 balls remaining.

For the next 40 minutes or so, all the attention at St Clare was focused on mobile devices tracking events at Wadebridge, where a Callington win would be enough to still give Penzance the title, just as was the scenario in 2023. On that balmy September day, Wadebridge won by 11 runs to take the crown. In an unbelievable coincidence, Wadebridge again edged home on Saturday by the identical margin – 11 runs! However, they effectively had to win the game twice. They were 74-7 after electing to bat, but were saved by Matt Rowe’s 82 to get them to 202. Then, with the Callington reply going well at 153-4 with Graham Wagg (47) and Max Tryfonos (53) having put on 62, the Penzance faithful were daring to believe. However, the innings fell away to end on 191-9. Penzance require a maximum of seven points, on the last day at Penwith rivals St Just, of all places.

That game at Cape Road also now has everything at stake for St Just. The led Truro by 15 points before Saturday, and when the city club were in early trouble must have thought their worries were over. They were in trouble themselves at Helston, sinking to 29-5 with Ryan Tonkin taking 4-28. They recovered to 125, and that looked a challenging target when Helston were 47-5. However, Karl Leathley (63no) played the innings of the match to steer Helston home by four wickets with nine overs to spare. It means St Just are tied with Truro on 168 points with the advantage of winning the head-to-heads, should both teams get the same points on Saturday. Truro hosts Grampound Road, who are not safe yet themselves. They made 186 at home to Redruth, with Harry Matthews top scoring with 42. Lloyd Brock (67) and Toby Stoddard (59) put on 125 for Redruth’s first wicket, and victory followed by seven wickets with seven overs to spare. Elsewhere, St Austell are set for a top-half finish after beating Werrington by two wickets at Wheal Eliza. John Moon top-scored with 27 in Werrington’s 143 all out. Ben Sleeman and Andrew Libby shared six wickets. Thevindu Dickwella continued his good form with 51 for the Saints. Victory came with 17 overs to spare.

.Standings (17/18): Penzance 266, Wadebridge 253, Helston 224, St Austell 214, Redruth 201, Werrington 196, Callington 185, Grampound Road 178, St Just 168, Truro 168.

In County Division One, there are also last-day issues to decide at both ends of the table. Camborne would have taken the title with victory at Hayle. Alfie MacDonald made 96 and Josh Fontana 60 to set the home side a target of 212. Hayle scraped home by one wicket after Dan Lello made 50 to add to his four wickets. Camborne need a maximum of six points at home to Perranporth in the final game. Beacon remain second after beating Newquay by 133 runs at Tolcarne Road with Jordan Thomas hitting  101 and Ben James taking 5-37. St Erme will finish bottom despite recording their first win since the end of May with a two-wicket home success over St Austell Seconds. Kyle van Rooyen made 71 after Steve Raven hit 65 for the Saints, who have moved back into the drop zone, five points behind Roche. They won at Falmouth by 40 runs. Falmouth are not safe themselves and need a maximum of five points at Newquay, should both Roche win at home to St Erme and St Austell defeat Hayle. Paul won their fifth game in a row with a victory by five runs at Perranporth.

Standings (17/18): Camborne 280 pts, Beacon 266, Hayle 258, Perranporth 202, Paul 171, Newquay 176, Falmouth 165, Roche 155, St Austell II 150, St Erme 129.

On Sunday, Stithians won the Eden Motorhomes Division 2 Cup at Redruth Cricket Club for the first time, having previously lost four semi-finals. In an entertaining final, they chased down Wadebridge Seconds' total of 172 to win by six wickets with 16 balls to spare. Mullion and Callington Seconds were losing semi-finalists.
