Round 14 of the Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League was completed on a fine, warm day. In the Premier Division, the top three, Penzance, Wadebridge and Helston, all won, with Penzance now leading by 19 points with four to play. At the bottom, Truro, St Just and Callington all lost to increase their relegation fears while Grampound Road and Werrington continued their winning runs.

Last year, Callington won at Penzance, but this time the home side made no mistake, knocking off the 191 required inside 20 overs for the loss of three wickets. Charlie Sharland dominated, hitting 124 not out off 65 balls with 9 sixes and 14 fours. Earlier, Graham Wagg made 48 as the visitors were reduced to 119-6 before Aidan Libby’s 48 got them to 190 in the 46th over. Tom Dinnis removed both openers and ended with 3-33. Callington lie just six points off the bottom.

Only opener Neil Curnow (31) passed the 20 mark as St Just were dismissed for 117 at Wadebridge. The six-pronged home attack shared the wickets with the pick spinner Matt Lawrence taking 2-19 from ten overs. Matt Robins made a patient 33 not out off 106 balls to steer Wadebridge home for the loss of five wickets in the 41st over. Lachlan Crump (25) and Alex Forward (24) contributed. Chami Edirisinghe took 2-17 from ten overs.

Helston dismissed Redruth for 136 at Beacon Parc in the 35th over. After being 65-5, Dulash Udayanga held the innings together before being last out for 58. Brad Bury did much of the early damage to take 3-18 from ten overs before Ryan Tonkin returned to take 3-36. Steve Jenkin (49) and Karl Leathley (27) put on 67 for Helston’s third wicket before Jayden Mitchell’s unbeaten 21 clinched a six-wicket success with over 21 overs to spare.

Werrington made it three wins on the bounce to climb 33 points ahead of bottom side Truro. They made 207-9 at Boscawen Park, reaching 188 before the fifth wicket fell. Opener Ben Smeeth made 49 with support from Thulina Dilshan (44), Mark Gribble (53) and Ben Jenkin (28). Freddie Bose took three late wickets for 33 runs. Truro were reduced to 89-6 before Akhilesh Sahani (34), Rob Harrison (42) and Bose (20no) got the total to 178 with seven balls unused. Dan Barnard (3-17) and Adam Hodgson (3-30) bowled key spells.

After losing four in a row, back-to-back wins have moved Grampound Road 15 points off the bottom. They made 246 at home to St Austell. Tom Orpe continued his good season with 48 before Harry Gregory made 31 and  Ravi Karunarathna almost batted through for 81. Gary Bone took 3-35. Curtis Dalby made 32 but the visitors slipped to 80-5 before Michael Bone (45) and Gary Bone (43) rallied to 171 all out in the 42nd over. On Sunday, Wadebridge bowed out of the Vitality Club T20 Cup in the Area Final, played at Bridgwater, in the most dramatic fashion. They beat Midsomer Norton in the semi-final by 24 runs. The WPEL side had a busy day as they competed in the Somerset ‘Major Cup Final’ at the County Ground, Taunton in the morning, losing to Ilminster, before moving up the M5. James Turpin hit 83 that included 7 sixes off 37 balls in the 193-6. In the final against Exmouth, Turpin made 33, Matt Robins 39 off 18 balls, before Matt Rowe (61no) and Alex Forward (58no) added 123 for the fourth wicket. Dan Pyle then struck a superb century for the Devonians, hitting 10 sixes and 7 fours in his 107 off 46 balls before being fifth out at 165 with seven overs to go. Late wickets added to the drama, but last man Peter Turnbull came in and struck his first delivery for four to gain a memorable one-wicket win with four balls remaining.

In County Division One, Beacon and Camborne both recorded their seventh straight win, to be separated by two points ahead of their meeting on Saturday at Camborne. Callum Edgcombe hit 100 and Gareth Mankee took 6-26 as Beacon beat strugglers Roche by 214 runs at Tolcarne Road, Camborne were dismissed for 219 at Falmouth, but it proved to be plenty as the home side were shot out for just 21.
