Following a damp morning, afternoon sun enabled the Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League programme to go ahead just about in full. In the big top of the table Premier clash, Penzance won at Wadebridge by 43 runs to take pole position in the title race. With five games to play they lead Wadebridge by 18 points. Helston, who lost a thriller at home to Werrington, are in third place but now 27 points off the pace.

The Penzance batting shone at Egloshayle Park, with all nine batters getting double figures. The game was scheduled to start an hour earlier to help Penzance travel to Sussex for their ECB Club Championship game. The morning drizzle saw a delay of thirty minutes with a 45 over game played. Opener Jack Paull anchored the innings to make 96 off 129 balls before being sixth out at 224. Christian Purchase and Charlie Sharland got twenties while Brad Wadlan made 30 before the third wicket fell at 131. Late impetus came from Josh Croom, who hit 3 sixes in his 36 off 16 balls. Mehran Sanwal and Jonny Ludlam were both unbeaten on 20 from nine balls. James Turpin sent down nine overs for only 28 runs while spinners Matt Lawrence and Matt Robins shared four late wickets. After losing Fred Wilkinson and Robins cheaply a mid-order collapse followed with Sanwal (3-30) removing Lachlan Crump for 54 and Turpin and Alex Forward in successive balls at 91-6. The home side were not done with, however, with Callum Wilson making 54 before being last out at 236 with three overs remaining. Matt Rowe batted at eleven due to injury, adding 38 for the final wicket.

For the second week running, Werrington won a last-over thriller. How important might that prove in their relegation fight where they are now 21 points off the bottom. Werrington were bowled out for 192 at Helston, where only two players got double figures. From 22-3, Mark Gribble made 32 and Thulina Dilshan a back-to-back century. He was dismissed by Lewis Goldsworthy (4-24) for exactly 100 at 174-6. Set 195,  Helston slipped to 73-4 before Steve Jenkin, Mark Jenkin and Sunny Osmont all got forties. Dilshan (3-43), bowling the final over, held his nerve to have Osmont caught off a skied catch to keeper Nick Lawson with three needed for victory off the last ball.

There was another overseas centurion at St Austell, where Thevindu Dickwella hit 5 sixes and 20 fours in his unbeaten 142 to secure an eight-wicket win over Callington with 13 overs to spare. Requiring 225, Dan Jarman supported with 38 in an opening stand of 144. Callington lost their first five wickets for 78 before Xavie Clarke made 31 and Rowen Taplin 64. Andrew Libby took 4-33.

The bottom two, Grampound Road and Truro, both won, and only nine points cover the bottom four teams now. Tom Orpe made 67 as Grampound Road hit 217 all out with an over unused at home to St Just. The visitors were dismissed for 187 in the 47th over. Opener Neil Curnow made 81 before being ninth out. The only real support came from his son, Logan, with 38. Nathan Keevil took 3-39 at the top of the order.

Truro made what looked a modest 152-9 at Redruth, having recovered from 77-7 thanks to Adam Price with 33 supported by youngsters Wilf Bartlett and Freddie Bose. It proved enough as Redruth were shot out for 71 in 31 overs with opener Toby Whiteford’s 17 the only double-figure score.  Akhilesh Sahani took 5-45 despite sending down 16 wides. Bose and Scott Kellow both took 2-8 from seven and eight over spells, respectively.

Standings (13/18): Penzance 197, Wadebridge 179, Helston 170, Redruth 165, St Austell 162, Werrington 148, Callington 136, St Just 132, Grampound Road 130, Truro 127.

Penzance are through to the ECB National Club Championship semi-finals for the first time after a convincing win at Middleton on Sunday. They dismissed the Sussex side for only 69 and went on to win by nine wickets. Mehran Sanwal took 5-26 with Josh Croom and Tom Dinnis taking two each to dismiss the home side in 19 overs. Jack Paull made an unbeaten 25 as the winning runs came in the tenth over. Penzance will host the Essex side, Wanstead & Snaresbrook, on 17th August for a place in the September Lord's final.

In County Division 1, the top three all won to open up a 39-point gap with five games to play. Camborne trail Beacon by a point, and the pair clash at Roskear on 9 August. Two teams will be relegated with 19 points, currently covering the bottom four..

Jordan Thomas inspired Beacon to a win over the bottom side St Erme, at Tolcarne Road. He made 67 and took 3-14. Kyle van Rooyen replied with 4-25 and 34 for the visitors in the hundred-run defeat. Following his 122 against Paul in the last home game, Aussie Josh Fontana made 151 against St Austell Seconds as Camborne piled up 336-4. Dan Stephens hit 90 in an opening stand of 222. Hayle beat Roche by seven wickets at the Towans with the visitors dismissed for 85. Nate Wiggins took 4-22 and Steve Richards 3-21 before making 29 not out.

Paul moved off the bottom with a first win since May. They made 224-8 at Falmouth with Ben Brooks 73 and Ross Williams 66 putting on 130 for the second wicket. Michael Fitchett took 4-31 from ten overs in the 68-run success. The mid-table clash at Perranporth saw Newquay win by just one wicket, chasing 122. Glen Burgess took 4-32  for Newquay. The visitors were 76-7 before Gangul Ravina’s unbeaten 26 got them over the line despite Bryn Evans taking 5-25.
