The Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League reached the halfway mark on a very warm, humid day with morning fog and drizzle returning in late afternoon to cause some interruptions. In the Premier Division, that was the case at Penzance, where the leaders won the Penwith derby with St Just after a DLS calculation. They lead Wadebridge at the turn by 14 points, for whom Callum Wilson took eight wickets. The relegation dogfight at the bottom has intensified. With only one win in six games, Callington are now one of five teams covered by nine points in what will be an intriguing second half. The bottom four are separated by four points.
Standings (9/18): Penzance 143, Wadebridge 129, Redruth 127, Helston 116, St Austell 108, Callington 97, Grampound Road 92, St Just 92, Truro 90, Werrington 88.
St Just staged a fine recovery at Penzance after being 23-4 to make 222-7 in fifty overs. Neil Curnow and Chami Edirisinghe both got forties before an unbroken eighth wicket stand between skipper Gareth May (33no) and young Logan Curnow, who hit 5 sixes in his unbeaten 72 off 35 balls. An hour’s delay for the ‘mizzle’ at tea reduced the target to 167 from 30 overs. Christian Purchase was out for 85 just before victory came by six wickets with five overs to spare.
The story at Wadebridge was all about Callum Wilson, who took the first eight wickets for 21 in ten overs. The eighth was that of Werrington’s overseas Thulina Dilshan for 59, with the score at 85. Wilson had five balls to take all ten, but Jordan Duke and Mark Taskis survived. The innings ended at 107 and a defeat by 124 runs. Wadebridge had made 231-7 with James Turpin following up his Hawkey Cup Final Player of the Match performance with 101 after Matt Rowe made 63 in a fourth wicket stand of 96. Taskis took 3-38.
After a two-match blip Redruth got back to winning ways with a five-wicket success at St Austell with three overs to spare. Alex Bone made 56 as the Saints recovered from 64-4 to be all out for 176 in the final over. Piran Kent took 4-43 and Dulash Udayanga 4-38. Udayanga then saw his side home with an unbeaten 63 after opener Toby Whiteford made 39.
Helston had a convincing seven-wicket home win over Callington, who were dismissed for 113 in 38 overs. Opener James Brenton made 31 as they got to 59 without loss before a collapse. Sunny Osmont (3-17) took the big wickets of Max Tryfonos, Liam Lindsay, second ball and Xavie Clarke before leg spinner Harry Saunders wrapped up the tail with 4-16. Dan Jenkin made 42 as Helston eased home with 22 overs to spare.
Truro ended a run of five defeats with a victory at Grampound Road in a DLS game by 37 runs. Harry Phillips (79), Akhilesh Sahani (60) and Ted Phillips (53) led the way in the 282-7. Nathan Keevil took 4-49. A revised target saw the Road require 189 from 27 overs. Antony Angove and Harry Matthews both got thirties, but after losing the first five wickets for 77, the innings closed at 151-8. Neil Ivamy’s first team return saw him take 3-21.
In one of the quickest Hawkey Cup Finals on record, Wadebridge defeated Grampound Road at St Austell by ten wickets in a match that lasted less than 19 overs. Light rain delayed the start by ten minutes. On electing to bat, Grampound Road lost Dave Hoskings to the sixth ball of the innings, bowled by James Turpin. In the next over, Callum Wilson accounted for Ravi Karunarathna. Antony Angove followed bowled by Turpin two balls later, and when Jack Mingo fell to Wilson, the Road were in all sorts of trouble at 15-4 off four overs. Alex Lean (13) and skipper Tom Orpe (16) rallied, but the last six wickets fell for 17 runs in the space of 26 balls. The end came at 53 off 11.2 overs. Lachlan Crump picked up 4-9, Turpin 3-19 and Wilson 2-17.
The Wadebridge openers knocked off the runs in 7.2 overs with Turpin making 42 not out off 26 balls with 2 sixes and 6 fours. Matt Robins supported with 13 not out.
St Austell - Grampound Road 53 (11.2) (T Orpe 16; L Crump 4-9, J Turpin 3-19, C Wilson 2-17 ) lost to Wadebridge 58-0 (7.2) (J Turpin 42no, M Robins 13no) by ten wickets. Player of the Match – James Turpin.

A remarkable game at Perranporth saw the home side recover from 0-4 off ten balls and 18-7 to make 135 thanks to Josh Anderson’s 55. Dinuka Dilshan ended with 5-18, including a hat-trick in the second over. Dan Hocking took 4-29. Camborne’s reply was interrupted, but they achieved the revised target of 112 for four wickets with over 14 overs to spare. Skipper Alfie MacDonald was unbeaten on 62.
