Sunday 3 Matches 3 Completed
The sixth week of the Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League was the first where there was widespread disruption due to the weather. The county had overnight and morning rain. It resulted in 38 of 67 games (57%) being cancelled. The eastern section was badly affected, with only a game at Tintagel being completed and one at Tideford abandoned after nine overs. Several games in the west were played after delayed starts, although isolated showers continued during the afternoon.
In the Premier Division, all five games were played after delayed starts. It was similar in County Division 1, apart from a cancellation at St Erme. However, the games at Helston in the Premier and Hayle in County 1 were abandoned as ‘No Results’ due to the CCL Rule that doesn’t allow DLS to determine a result unless 20 overs are available to the side batting second.
Redruth are top of the Premier after winning at morning joint leaders Wadebridge by just one run. Remarkably, after a day of rain on the north coast, a 20-over game was able to be played. Dulash Udayanga made 35 in Redruth’s 112-9. Callum Wilson took 3-14. The home side reached 79-2 off 11 overs but James Turpin (36) and Matt Rowe (37) were dismissed by Daniel Viner. In a dramatic finish with four needed off the final over, Lloyd Brock took two wickets before Finn Wilkinson was run out off the final ball, coming back for a second to tie the game.
It was anything but close at Penzance, where the hosts' seam attack destroyed Werrington with the new ball. Tommy Sturgess (2-14) and former Werrington player Tom Dinnis (4-13) reduced the visitors to 12-4. The game had been reduced to 32 overs following a delayed start, but Werrington were dismissed inside 22 overs for only 40. Christian Purchase (23no) and Jack Paull (20no) knocked off the runs in just seven overs for the most comprehensive of wins.
The play was reduced to 40 overs at Truro, where St Just made 133-9 with a further over lost to rain. Neil Curnow made 24. Truro’s target was reduced to 124 off 34 overs by DLS, but they were dismissed for 117 with 22 balls unused. Jack Williams made 28 late on, but Chami Edririsinghe (4-22) took four middle-order wickets in a decisive spell.
There was a frustrating day of rain interruptions at Helston, where the original 45-over game ended up being abandoned eight overs short of the DLS 20-over threshold. St Austell dismissed the home side for 172 after both openers Dan Jenkin and Billy Taylor, made 47. Ben Sleeman and Mike Bone both took three wickets. Rain meant reductions to 42 overs, 39 and eventually a target of 142 in 25 overs. Having been 12-4 the Saints were 66-5 in the 13th over when rain won the day. Skipper Alex Bone was unbeaten on 29 after Ryan Tonkin did early damage with 3-18.
A 20-over game was possible at Grampound Road, where Callington hit 106-7, with Liam Lindsay top scoring with 27. The ‘Road’ got to 46-2, but, after skipper Tom Orpe was dismissed for 26, at 72-6, the task proved too much, ending on 91-8. Lindsay had the final word with 3-18.
In County Division One, leaders Hayle might well feel hard done by following an abandonment at home to Newquay. The visitors made 106-7 after 38 overs were reduced to 32. Adam Jenkin hit 24. Further showers saw Hayle set 84 off 22 overs. They had raced to 52-0 in the sixth over with Aizaz Ahmad 41 not out when a brief heavy shower forced the players off. With only six minutes before the minimum of 20 overs being available to the side batting second threshold was exceeded that was that. Beacon took advantage to move three points off the pace with an 11-run DLS win at home to neighbours Camborne. Jordan Thomas made 56 in the 151-6 off 23 overs. Liam Weeks hit 40 in the Camborne reply with Callum Edgcombe taking 4-28.
Perranporth won at Falmouth by five wickets, reaching their DLS target of 78 from 25 overs. They had been 3-4 in a dramatic start, but Tom Bradburn (34) and Harry Watkins (24no) calmed the nerves. Bradburn and Bryn Evans had shared eight wickets to dismiss the hosts for 87. St Austell Seconds beat neighbours Roche by nine wickets in a 25-over game at Wheal Eliza. Daniel Robotham and James Hunkin both made 35 in Roche’s 123-9 with three wickets for Jack Carter and Henry Johnson. Steve Raven’s unbeaten 72 saw the Saints cruise home with five overs to spare. St Erme and Paul was cancelled at 16:30.
