"It is with a heavy heart that I have to announce the passing of my father Clive Polkinghorne (aged 77) who died peacefully yesterday  (27 January) at Treliske Hospital.

Dad's cricket career in Cornwall saw him play for local clubs Mawnan Smith, North Close, Redruth, Long Rock, Crofty Holman, Barripper and most notably Hayle where he won 4 Vinter Cups.

Dad also played for Devon and Cornwall Police and Cornwall over 50s.

Dad's top score was 99 and he got out dancing down the pitch as he had to play a second match that day in the Edwards Cup Final.

He took countless wickets with his off spin and he continued playing until he turned 73.

He will be sorely missed by his wife Sue, myself and my brother Ross."

Hayle won four Vinter Cups in the 1980s.

They beat Troon in 1980 by 15 runs in a high-scoring final after scoring 149-6.

Four years later they beat St Gluvias by eight wickets chasing down 115.

In 1986 Perranarworthal were comfortably defeated by 38 runs.

To complete a memorable decade in 1989 there was a derby win by nine wickets against Leedstown, who were making their only final appearance.

It was Hayle's last win in the competition with final defeats following in 1992, 1998 and 2001.

Following those wins in the WT Edwards Cup they beat St Austell, Werrington and Newquay and shared with St Blazey in 1984.

Clive ended his career at Hayle playing in the second eleven in 2011.

He then played for Crofty Holman Seconds regularly for five seasons.

He ended his CCL career with three seasons at Barripper playing his final game for the Seconds against Helston Thirds in July 2019.

He remained a keen supporter and would be one of the first in the queue at Vinter Cup semi-finals and the final at Camborne, parked in his usual spot in the top railway corner at Roskear.
