Women’s indoor hardball cricket league reaches its second week with highlights from Truro, Werrington and Helston Teams.
Week two of the Women’s Indoor Cricket League, held at Cornwall Cricket Centre Truro, saw some great action from all the teams involved. Truro strom to the top of the table whilst Werrington leapfrog Wadebridge with their first win to take second in the table.
Truro dominated the opener winning the toss in the first game and choosing to bowl against Werrington. After a slow start and some tight bowling from Truros opening bowlers, Tamsin Heayn picked up the first wicket of Zoe with a smart catch and bowled. Grace Kirby came to the crease and with Emma Horrell and steadied the ship. Both batters played some thumping shots against the net to keep the scores ticking in 1s, however, some slick and well drilled fielding from Truro made it difficult for the batters to rotate and score the 2s and 3s, vital scoring options in the indoor game. Ashley Bridges was the other wicket taker for Truro, Tamsin with her second catch of the innings. Grace and Tilly ended the innings with a partnership of 21, Grace with a massive 6 to end off the innings. Truros tight bowling though was highlighted by the fact they only gave away 2 extras in the innings, limiting Werrington to a below par 44 off their 10 overs. Truro made light work of the run chase, Hannah Grice and Wicket Weeper Emma knocking off the runs in 5.1 overs. Both batters showed different qualities whilst chasing the runs, Hannah running hard with nudges and nurdles whilst Emma using her power to find the boundry down the ground.
Werrington get their first win in the league. Batting first against a young and promising Helston side, Grace Kirby and Freya got off to a great start. Grace showed a much improved awareness of tactics for the indoor game, compared with her first knock, looking to run the ball into gaps and rotating the strike. The partnership showed great communication with the batters who complimented each other well, until Freya fell to a smart piece of fielding from Elsie, who got to the ball quickly to produce a great run out. After Grace retired at 25, mum, Hayley came in and finished off the innings well, supported by Tilly, scoring at over 9s in the last 3 overs. Hayley with a well struck 4 in the last over taking the score onto 79, carrying the momentum into the second innings. Zoe was bang on target for Werrington, bowling Helstons opener Jess with her first ball, giving her side a great start. Lizzie and Amber looked to go after the target, however, an unfortunate breakdown in communication left Amber stranded half way down the wicket and was run out. Lizzie showed resilience scoring 12, however the Helston innings fell away and were eventually bowled out for 35. All 5 Werrington bowlers hunted well as a pack and produced, collectively, some very economical bowling figures.
Improved and impressive Helston team gave Truro a run for their money in the game of the night. Truro won the toss and batted first this time, much to the evident delight of Helstons captain, Amber. safe to say, she would have bowled first if she won the toss! Rebecca Rowe and Hannah Grice opened up for Truro and produced a great foundation for their team, scoring runs at a consistent rate and both retiring at 25. Both batters showed street smarts and good indoor technique. Lisa Harper came in at 3 and once again showed her power, striking the ball well to pick up 2 straight boundaries. Whilst the batters played well, the Helston bowlers never let the game get away from them and kept to their task really well. Amber, Chloe N and Lizzie only went for a total of only 26 off their combined 5 overs. Their young side showed good agility in the field, getting to the ball well, and denying the opportunity for the Truro batters to rotate the strike from time to time. Neve and Chloe J took to the crease for Helston. They put on an extremely impressive 27 runs off the first 3 overs and looked to be giving the target a real good go with some precision gap finding and positive, no hesitation, running between the wickets. Enter the evergreen Tamsin Hearn into the attack, who picked up a very important wicket for Truro. Lisa Harper followed this up with a wicket in the next over, taking a smart caught and bowled. Amber joined Neve at the wicket and kept the hopes of Helston alive, scampering for every run they could find in the middle of the innings. With a couple more wickets falling and with Neve retiring at 25, the innings slowed up, and even with Lizzies quick fire 15 Not out at the end it was the experience of Truros bowlers who shone through and supported their team to a 13 run victory.
Helson will be looking to pick up their first win when they play their next double header on the 19th Feb. The action continues on the 10th Feb (8-10) when Wadebridge return to action against Perrenporth who will be making their debut in the league, and the night will conclude with the mouthwatering clash of Truro vs Redruth.
