After the weather of recent months ironically the ECB Cornwall Premier season got underway under blue skies and warm sunshine. What might well be the match of the season came at Camborne where Callington dramatically clinched a tie – 252 runs apiece - with a run out off the final ball. Callington reached 198 before losing their fourth wicket with new skipper Graham Wagg making 72 and South African  Liam Lindsay 58. In reply the home team slipped to 31-3 before Somerset all-rounder Lewis Goldsworthy played one of the great Roskear innings. He hit 146 off 155 balls including 4 sixes. Ten were needed off the final over with four wickets remaining. Five came off the first two balls then Goldsworthy was caught in the deep. Kiwi Jordan Gately followed the next ball then Dan Stephens hit a boundary to level the scores. He drove the final ball to mid-off but Luke Brenton’s direct hit just beat Stephens’ dive in the most dramatic of finishes.

Meanwhile, four miles away, there was also drama at Redruth who beat the champions Wadebridge by two wickets. Alex Macinnes was the home hero on his debut. The 30-year-old tall left-arm pace bowler was born in England but moved to Australia at a young age. He took 5-21 from ten overs to reduce the champions to 52-6. James Turpin made 25 to get the total to 106. Coming in at 40-5 sixteen-year-old Ollie Bonds then hit an unbeaten 37 to get the Reds over the line with 18 overs to spare.

Penzance got off to a solid start at Truro in the post-Greg Smith era with a six-wicket win with 25 overs to spare. The home side were bowled out for 120 with Jonny Ludlam and Tom Dinnis sharing six wickets. Christian Purchase (37) and Jack Paull (31) put on 65 for the first wicket. Pakistan’s Amir Yamin took 3-47 on debut.

A wedding weakened St Austell of regulars including skipper Gary Bone at home to St Just. Neil Curnow (55) and Gareth May (56) added 93 for the Penwith side's first wicket. Australian Daniel Standing took three wickets on debut. Half-centuries from Dan Jarman and Alex Bone plus an unbeaten 73 from Connor Cooke saw to Saints reach the 210 target for the loss of four wickets with two balls to spare.

Werrington got off to a good start with a 68-run success at Helston. Director of Cricket Adam Hodgson made 71 not out to see his side to 199-7. Karl Leathley hit 51 but his dismissal at 85-4 saw the innings fall away to 131 all out with Ben Smeeth taking 4-18 from ten overs, adding to his 38 with the bat.

On Sunday Leathley hit a century and Dan Jenkin made 89 as Helston beat Cornwood in the ECB National Club Championship. It sets up a second-round tie at Penzance on Bank Holiday Sunday. They defeated Bridgwater by five wickets with Christian Purchase top-scoring with 65

In County Division One Newquay lead the table after winning at Penzance by 219 runs. Newcomers Rahim Mangal  (89) and Adam Jenkin (83) shared a third-wicket stand of 156. St Erme are second after a 60-run home win over Camborne seconds. Ben Brooks made runs and took wickets as Paul won by four wickets at Falmouth. Hayle hit 159-9 at home to Grampound Road who were shot out for just 25 in reply. James Franklin took 6-10 from six overs. Gareth Mankee was in the wickets again for Beacon taking 5-29 in the 53-run home win over Mullion. The Wadebridge against Roche game is rescheduled for 21 July as the Riverside ground was still rain-affected.
