Sunday 1 Match 1 Completed
After a week where temperatures had hit 30 degrees, it was unsurprisingly a day for batters in the Bond Timber ECB Cornwall Premier, and none more so than at Werrington, where records were broken. The home side’s 408-5 against Camborne set a new highest Premier total, overtaking St Just’s 402 in 2012 and Redruth’s 401 in 2019. Thulina Dilshan’s superb 223 has only been bettered by St Just’s Neil Curnow, who hit 229 against Redruth in 2013. Dilshan and Mark Gribble (122no) put on a record 336 for the third wicket. It beats only two other 300 stands since the Premier began in 2001. The 326 by Ryan Edwards and Greg Smith for Penzance in 2019 and the 325 by Dewayne Bowden and Dave Roberts for St Just in 2006. In the Camborne reply, Scott Kellow made 75 to add to his three wickets.
The leaders Callington hit 280-9 at home to St Austell, with Liam Lindsay (106) and Matt Thompson (75) adding 138 for the second wicket. Gary Bone took 4-33. St Austell’s top nine batters all got double figures in the reply of 210 all out in the 47th over. Rowan Taplin top-scored with 38 while Matt Whalley wrapped up the tail with four wickets. There was a dramatic game at Grampound Road where Wadebridge chased down a target of 270 to win off the final ball. The eighth wicket pair of Fred Wilkinson and Ross McLachlan held their nerve to get nine off the last over, including two off the final ball. Lachlan Crump made 94 before being sixth out at 233. Earlier, Antony Angove (64) and Tom Orpe (116) put on 174 for the ‘Road’s’ first wicket. Crump’s late 5-38 was to prove a telling factor as the home side ended on 269-8.
Helston finally got a first win with a comfortable 71-run success at St Just. Dan Jenkin made 45, and with all the lower order getting into double figures 211-8 was posted. Jayden Mitchell struck twice to remove openers Scott Harvey and Ellis May, and Rhys Brownfield and Chami Edirisinghe followed at 37-4. Philip Nicholas (25), Jamie Semmens (32) and Gareth May (20) rallied, but the tail fell away to be 140 all out in the 41st over. Bryn Evans (4-34) and Mitchell (3-24) were amongst the wickets. Penzance made 263 all out off a full 50 overs at Redruth. Basil Akram made 88 and Sammy King 76, with Jamie Veall ending with 4-48. Then drama as the Penzance innings was abandoned after seven balls with the umpires ruling the run-ups were unsafe. A League investigation is in process.
In County Division One, Hayle had a 131-run home win over Luckett, with Dan Lello making 90. Andrew Hoskin and George Wilkinson shared six wickets. Henry Wilkinson made a late 39 in the 115 all out. Max Jenkin took 4-29 from ten overs. Paul’s good start continued with a ten-run home win over Newquay. Andrew Snell made 40 in the 196-9. Tom Owen took 3-24. Adam Jenkin (61) and Jack Howarth (35) got to a promising 165-5 before the innings fell away to end on 186-9 thanks to Keiran Bowden’s 5-31. Truro won by 103 runs at Roche with Pakistan professional Raja Hamza Waheed making 130 before being third out at 218. Neil Ivamy’s 4-23 ensured the home side only got to 201 with Oscar Green top scoring with 38. Falmouth found themselves part of Beacon’s 120th anniversary celebrations at Tolcarne Road. A club reunion witnessed a five-wicket home win. The visitors’ third wicket pair of Adrian Noott (26) and James Tomlinson (40) were the only batters into double figures in their 127 all out. Ben James took 3-8 from ten overs. He then made 42. Isaac Hurtle-Hymans took 3-23 before Jordan Thomas’s 37 not out made the difference. Stithians went down to a 26-run home defeat to Perranporth, who posted 254-8 led by Dan Hall’s 53 before one of three victims for Matthew Ellis. Opener Simon Danby then top scored with 40. Having been 135-6, the last four wickets added 93 before the end came with seven balls remaining.
Last year's ECB Club Championship runners-up, Penzance, have been dramatically knocked out in this year’s second round by Bath Cricket Club. South African professional Grant Thompson hit an unbeaten century as Penzance posted 302 for 7 in their 40 overs at St Clare. Basil Akram made 57 and Sammy King 42. However, Bath chased down the big target to win by four wickets with five balls to spare. Sam Young, who played in the MCCA Trophy for Cornwall in 2018, hit a match-winning 111 not out. He added a crucial 107 for the sixth wicket with Max O’Farrell, who was dismissed for 52 with four required. Ben Fletcher and Tom Dinnis took two wickets each.
