Penzance Cricket Club are through to a Lord's final for the first time after the most spectacular of semi-final home wins in the ECB National Club Championship on Sunday. After being put in, they hammered a mammoth 410 for 6 in 40 overs against Wanstead & Snaresbrook from Essex. Christian Purchase led the way with a magnificent 143, with Brad Wadlan, Tommy Sturgess, and Josh Croom all hitting quickfire half-centuries. Opener Jack Paull helped to set the tone with 43 in an opening stand of 183 in just 18 overs before Nic Halstead-Cleak weighed in with 47. Sturgess and Croom continued the carnage until the end, adding 91 for the sixth wicket off just 32 balls. In all, 24 sixes and 42 fours were hit in the innings. Purchase hit 16 fours and 11 sixes off 63 balls.
In earlier rounds, he scored 153no at Golden Hill (Bristol) and 103 against Bridgwater at home. Wanstead & Snaresbrook were dismissed for 231 in 32 overs to leave Penzance winners by 179 runs. Mehran Sanwal and Wadlan each took three wickets as Yuvraj Odedra top-scored with 79 for the Essex side.
Penzance are the first Cornish Club to win a semi-final in the competition after defeats for Camborne (1982), Truro (1990) and St Just (2006 & 2007). They will meet Ormskirk in the final at Lord's on Saturday, 20th September. The Lancashire side won a tight game at home to Warwickshire’s Knowle & Dorridge by two wickets with four balls to spare.
Penzance can complete the most memorable of weeks by retaining the Bond Timber Premier title on Saturday. They require a maximum of 18 points against relegation-threatened Truro at St Clare to take the title with a game to spare. They made 314-8 at home to Redruth with Jack Paull getting 104 and Tommy Sturgess 61. For the second time this season, a lengthy delay was caused by the Air Ambulance landing and taking 14 overs out of the game. Redruth had a revised DLS target of 257 from 36 overs but were dismissed for 146 with Mehran Sanwal taking 5-32. Elsewhere, on a day of warm sunshine but very strong easterly winds, second-placed Wadebridge had a close call at home to St Austell before winning by just six runs. Skipper Kelvin Snell made 58 in the 222-7. Thevindu Dickwella (109) hit his third century in four games but was bowled by Matt Lawrence (4-38). After reaching 158-2, the loss of four wickets for six runs cost the visitors.
Truro have it all to do at the bottom after defeat to Callington by 97 runs. Liam Lindsay made 108 to see Callington to 248-7. Ted Phillips made 42 and Scott Harvey 41 in the reply, with Max Tryfonos taking four wickets. Truro trail St Just by 15 points now, and it could have been more had the Penwith club managed to get over the line at Werrington. John Moon made 75 and Adam Hodgson 74 to set the visitors a target of 262. Neil Curnow then made 134 before being lbw, pulling Ben Smeeth with 25 required from 22 balls. Werrington won by nine runs to secure their safety with a fourth win in five games. Similarly, Grampound Road’s excellent late-season form continued with a third win in four games to beat Helston by 63 runs. David Hoskings and Antony Angove hit fifties in their 231. Ryan Tonkin made 44 in the reply.
Standings (16/18): Penzance 257, Wadebridge 235, Helston 205, St Austell 196, Werrington 190, Redruth 181, Callington 177, Grampound Road 174, St Just 163, Truro 148.
In County Division One, after a close-run season, Camborne are closing in on the title, needing just 14 points maximum from their last two games. Liam Weeks hit a century as they won at bottom club St Erme by 174 runs. Meanwhile, Beacon recorded back-to-back defeats, albeit by the narrow margin of one wicket at home to Perranporth. Roche are back in the relegation position after defeat at Paul by 73 runs, where Michael Fitchett took 7-28 for the home side to give them a fourth win in a row to get out of trouble.
St Austell Seconds gave themselves a survival chance, winning their first game in eight with a two-wicket home win over Newquay. If they can repeat that at St Erme, and Roche win at Falmouth, it will set up a dramatic final day with any one of the three potentially facing the drop. Falmouth’s doubts remain after a heavy defeat at Hayle by 182 runs, with Nate Wiggins making 122, Dan Lello 75 and Tom Sharp 55 in the big score of 307-4.
Standings (16/18): Camborne 272 pts, Beacon 246, Hayle 240, Perranporth 194, Paul 172, Newquay 170, Falmouth 157, St Austell II 144, Roche 138, St Erme 110.
