Wadebridge & Truro clinch County titles.

© Adrian Langdon Wadebridge - Cornwall Premier League Champions 2023

What a dramatic finish to the Bond Timber Cornwall League season! Never before has the destination of a Premier League title still been in doubt with just one over remaining. However, with the sun setting at just before half past seven on a balmy September evening Wadebridge, in front of an excited large home crowd, held their nerve to beat Callington by 11 runs. It set off scenes of unbridled joy and celebration, that lasted long into the night. An emotional occasion for so many associated with the club over the years including 88 year-old former Captain and League Chairman Keith Davis who watched the stream from his North Devon home.

With title rivals Penzance winning at Camborne in mid-afternoon Wadebridge knew only a win would see them crowned County Champions for the first time since 1968. In those days there was an East v West County Final and ironically Penzance were defeated at Egloshayle Park by nine wickets. Fast forward 55 years at the Riverside and it came down to Callington requiring 14 off Elliot Dunnett’s final over. Liam Lindsay, who had held the innings together with 79, fell over injuring his leg off the first delivery. Next ball he holed out to Matt Robins on the long-on boundary, and effectively that was the title decided. Had it gone for six, leaving eight needed off four balls and four wickets left, the tension both on the ground and for those viewing the live stream in the Penzance clubhouse fifty miles away would have been unbearable.

The Winning Moment

At tea, Wadebridge looked well placed having made 246-8 with opener Kevin Renecke almost batting through for 101 made off 130 balls. Having been 111-1 they had been reduced to 146-5 before Kelvin Snell was dismissed off the final ball for a crucial 58.  The bowling bonus points were enough to guarantee Callington's safety and when they reached 116-1 in the 23rd over the home camp were understandably nervous. Aidan Libby (62) was leg before to Robins (3-26) who then removed professional Graham Wagg without scoring. The visitors remained in the game thanks to James Brenton’s 48 as he added 97 for the fifth wicket with Lindsay. The pair got it down to 24 required off 21 balls, with six wickets left, before skipper James Turpin struck twice removing Brenton and Ben Ellis.

On the most memorable of days for the club, the second eleven also won Division Two East to be promoted to County Division 1 for the first time. Only six years ago a place the first team held. 19 years ago (2004) the first XI  beat Callington seconds on the final day to clinch Division 2 East - quite a journey. Kelvin Snell has now won the title with three clubs – Paul in 2010 and Truro, also dramatically in the closing overs in 2017. Matt Lawrence has won back-to-back titles having been in the Penzance team in 2022.

Elsewhere, the game at Camborne only lasted 42 overs with the home side dismissed for 76 and Penzance winning by nine wickets in the eleventh over. Hayle’s bid to avoid relegation ended at the Towans with a 16-run defeat to St Austell, who have finished in third spot to add to the WT Edwards Cup success.  As it turned out a Hayle win would not have been enough as Helston finally came good at home to St Just. With the top six all getting runs maximum batting points were gained to all but ensure survival at the break.  It was enough to set up a 40-run victory. In the other game, Redruth turned the form book upside down with a five-wicket win after bowling Werrington out for 71 at Ladycross.

Final Standings: Wadebridge 288 pts, Penzance 283, St Austell 224, Werrington 210, St Just 196, Camborne 193, Redruth 191, Helston 187, Callington 179, Hayle 160.

The only last-day issue in County Division One was whether Truro would get the two points needed to take the title. They duly obliged within 95 minutes at Boscawen Park and went on to make 297-6 with Charlie Kent getting a century. Mullion responded with 123 all out to end the season with four losses in five games. Paul made sure of being runners-up with a 127-run home win over Lanhydrock, who gained just one success in the season. Third-placed Falmouth ended on a high hitting 345-7 at Penzance Seconds with James Tomlinson scoring a century. Fourth-placed St Erme were also convincing victors at Redruth Seconds by 122 runs. With seven wins in the last ten starts, Grampound Road ended in seventh thanks to an 86-run win at Newquay. The only close game was at Roche where Beacon scraped home by one wicket to end in fifth.

Final Standings: Truro 339 pts, Paul 320, Falmouth 319, St Erme 274, Beacon 261, Newquay 251, Grampound Road 239, Penzance II 238, Mullion 235, Roche 200, Redruth II 169, Lanhydrock 121.
