Penzance took a step closer to retaining their Bond Timber Premier Division title with a comfortable win at Werrington and are now 21 points clear of Wadebridge with three games remaining. At the bottom, St Just won a vital home game with Truro in dramatic fashion, while Callington eased their relegation fears with a comeback win at home to Grampound Road.
Werrington were missing some regulars for the home clash with Penzance and posted 141 in 43 overs with George Rickard top scoring with 45. Mehran Sanwal and Charlie Hearn took three wickets each. Former county bowler Sam Hockin caused some alarms, taking three wickets with the score on 27. After having Christian Purchase caught, he accounted for Charlie Sharland and Brad Wadlan, both without scoring. Any nerves were eased as Jack Paull (80no) and Grant Stone (26) added 83 and the six-wicket win followed with 14 overs to spare. A huge weekend ahead for Penzance with the visit of Redruth, followed by Sunday’s National Club Championship semi-final against Wanstead and Snaresbrook, from Essex.
Second-placed Wadebridge won by 88 runs at Redruth. Lachlan Crump made 37 before being third out at 70. James Turpin took up the reins to make 51 in the 197- 9. Craig Johnson took 4-43. Dulash Udayanga made 35 in the reply, but once he was fourth out at 95, the innings collapsed to 109 all out. Matt Robins took 3-10 from ten overs and Charlie Ellis, back on first team duty, took 4-4 from six overs.
The drama of the day came at St Just in the big relegation battle. Truro posted 206-9 with the top seven batters all getting double figures. Scott Harvey, on his return after two years, made 15 opening the batting. Skipper Charlie Kent got 69, and Akhilesh Sahani 39. Gareth May picked up three wickets at the end. May (29) and Neil Curnow (40) then opened with a stand of 78. At 166-4 the home side still looked in good shape, but three quick wickets saw them slip to 176-7 with only four overs to go. That became 19 off two overs, but Truro had been warned over the last hour that they were behind the over rate. Rather than Freddie Bose completing his spell, the penultimate over was the first of the year for occasional spinner Ted Phillips. It went for 14 and included two no-balls, taking up more valuable time. Five were needed off the last over from Kent. A boundary from Phil Nicholas (47no) tied the scores. Having received warnings, a six-run time penalty was imposed when the time limit was reached after the third ball, giving St Just a two-wicket win.
Meanwhile, at the other end of the county, it was a day for the bowlers at Callington. Only the Grampound Road openers made double figures in the 104 all out. Tom Orpe, after retiring with a hand injury in the third over, returned to make 39, and Antony Angove got 31, but the last eight wickets fell for 28 runs. Only 19 overs were needed with the Callington quicks sharing the wickets – Mo Danyaal took four and there were three each for Ben Ellis and Spencer Whatley. Callington were then reduced to 30-7 with Angove taking 4-23. They were saved by Ellis, who hit four sixes in his unbeaten 44 off 76 balls. Joe White supported with ten not out off 38 balls in an unbroken ninth wicket stand of 51.
St Austell moved to within eight points of third-placed Helston after beating them by three wickets with two balls to spare at Wheal Eliza. Helston were 54-4 but the middle order rallied with Jayden Mitchell making 45, Mark Jenkin 44 and Sunny Osmont an unbeaten 63. Liam Watson and Thevindu Dickwella shared six wickets. Dickwella then hit back-to-back home centuries before being dismissed at 177-4 for exactly 100. Alex Bone got 34 before falling to Osmont (3-37), leaving Adam Snowdon and Andrew Libby to get the four required off the last over.
Standings (15/18): Penzance 237, Wadebridge 216, Helston 197, St Austell 189, Redruth 175, Werrington 171, Callington 158, Grampound Road 155, St Just 155, Truro 142.
The big top of the table clash in County Division One went the way of Camborne, who take over to lead Beacon by 13 points with three to play. Camborne’s top order led the way as they posted 269-7. Openers Josh Fontana (42) and Daniel Stephens (65) added 74 for the first wicket before Dinuka Dilshan made 82 and Jamie Goldsworthy 38. After being reduced to 49-4, the Beacon innings fell away to 112 all out in the 37th over with Stephens completing a superb game with 5-23. Hayle won by eight wickets at Newquay with the Lello brothers, Dan and Matt, sharing six wickets. Falmouth got back on track with a five-wicket win at Perranporth with Adrian Noott taking 4-38 and Haydn Ayres top scoring with 39. At the bottom St Erme’s survival hopes suffered another blow as they lost at Paul by seven wickets, with Ross Williams hitting a fifty for the home side. They are joined in the relegation zone by St Austell seconds, whose seventh straight loss came at Roche to boost their survival chances. Stewart May made 37 and then took 3-6 from ten overs.
Standings (15/18): Camborne 252 pts, Beacon 239, Hayle 220, Perranporth 178, Newquay 164, Paul 154, Falmouth 153, Roche 132, St Austell II 126, St Erme 107.
On Sunday, South Petherwin won an entertaining Clive Rosevear Cup Final, defeating Menheniot Looe by just two runs at St Stephen. It’s the first time the North Cornwall club has won the title, having lost to Saltash Town in 2013.
