Hot weather that saw temperatures in the mid to high twenties on Friday was followed by morning showers and cooler conditions on Saturday. However, a full League programme got underway on time. Penzance strengthened their Premier lead to 15 points as they won at bottom club Truro, repeating their Bradleys Vinter Cup semi-final success from earlier in the week. Both second and third teams, Redruth and St Austell, went down to surprise defeats and have been overtaken by Wadebridge.

Penzance won at Truro by 44 runs but were given a scare by the home club. The champions were reduced to 64-4 before skipper Brad Wadlan made 69 and Grant Stone 44 in a fifth wicket stand of 112. Requiring 213, Truro had hopes at 80-1  but they slipped away to be all out for 168 in the 47th over. Opener Harry Phillips made 43 and spinner Charlie Hearn took 3-30.

Wadebridge are up to second after repeating their recent Hawkey Cup semi-final win at Callington. Opener Max Tryfonos (69) got Callington to 106 before the second wicket fell. Overseas player, Lachlan Crump, took 4-23 to restrict the innings to 204-8. Wadebridge lost former county captain Matt Robins without a run on the board. However, Crump batted well to anchor the innings with 74. Despite the efforts of Mohammad Danyaal (5-41), the victory by three wickets came with 20 balls to spare. It leaves last year’s runners-up in sixth, 31 points off the pace.

Grampound Road got their third win to surprise hosts Redruth by six wickets. The home side were dismissed for 119 thanks to a devastating spell from former county all-rounder Antony Angove. He removed the Redruth top six batters in an unchanged ten-over spell that cost just nine runs, seven of which were wides. At the end of his spell, the Reds were struggling at 76-6 off 26 overs. Only opener Toby Whiteford (41) and his brother Ellis (29no) got double figures. The Road lost both openers at 30 but Chris Roberts (36) and skipper Tom Orpe (42no) added 63 for the third wicket. The six-wicket win followed with almost 22 overs to spare.

Having been on the wrong end of a quickfire defeat at Penzance this year, Werrington dished out the treatment themselves with victory over St Austell at Ladycross by seven wickets in a game that only lasted 35.4 overs. It was another former county bowler, Sam Hockin, who wound back the clock by bowling an inspired spell of 7-32 in ten overs. Bowling in tandem, Dan Barnard took 3-32 from his ten overs. Skipper Alex Bone top scored with 15 in the 67 all out. John Moon and Adam Hodgson both passed 20 in the reply.

Helston got their third win with a three-wicket success at St Just, but with only an over to spare. St Just reached 133-3 after Chami Edirisinghe  (43) and Neil Curnow (35) added 62 for the fourth wicket. Leg spinner Harry Saunders (5-39) then took control as the innings slid to 176 all out. Billy Taylor (55) was second out for the visitors at 84 before Steve Jenkin (46) and Karl Leathley set up victory. Helston needed 25 off the last six overs and tied the scores with eight balls to go. Leathley was then caught for 41 by young Thomas George, son of former County all-rounder Mark, on his debut.

In County Division One, Beacon are the new leaders after Hayle lost at Camborne by 136 runs. That was thanks to a magnificent knock by young Camborne skipper Alfie MacDonald. He came to the crease after Dan Stephens (48) completed an opening stand of 106 with Josh Fontana (55). MacDonald hit 7 sixes in his 95 off 81 balls before being run out. Needing 249, a shell-shocked Hayle were rolled over for 112 with Dan Lello making 35. Dan Hocking and Piran Moyle shared six wickets. Beacon took advantage to move to the top, but it was a close run thing at Newquay. Jordan Thomas with 55 was the pick of a solid batting performance from the visitors in their 234-7. Adam Cocking almost saw his side to victory with an unbeaten 116 but they ended seven runs short on 228-7.

Perranporth raced to a nine-wicket win at Paul after the hosts were knocked over for 98. Travis Woolston took 3-36 and then hit 51 not out as victory came in the 15th over. St Austell Seconds got their third win with a 68-run home success over St Erme, who narrowly lost to St Just by 15 runs in the Bradleys Vinter Cup semi-final earlier in the week. David Munn (71) and Qasim Jamal (50) added 84 for the fifth wicket before Kyle van Rooyen came back to take 4-32. St Erme lost wickets steadily to be 168 all out in the 42nd over, with Ryan Pascoe top scoring with 28 late on. Jack Carter took 4-47. Falmouth find themselves at the foot of the table after Roche notched up back-to-back wins. Liam Phillips wrapped up the Falmouth innings for 80 by taking 4-18. Roche were 45-5 in reply but reached the target for the loss of six wickets in only 16 overs. Opener Dan Robotham hit six fours in his 26 off 17 balls before becoming one of three victims for Isaac Hurtle-Hymans.

On Sunday, Perranporth’s National Village hopes ended in the round of 32. They were beaten at home by former champions Goatacre from Wiltshire. Perranporth were dismissed for 74. The visitors lost four wickets for five runs to slip to 35-5 at one stage before steadying the ship.
