Cornwall Super 9s Disability Team Hosts Match Against Somerset

Last Sunday, June 23rd, Cornwall's Super 9s Disability team hosted Somerset at St Stephen Cricket Club. Despite initial setbacks due to adverse weather, the ground team worked tirelessly to prepare the pitch and facilities, ensuring the game could proceed as planned.

Cornwall's captain, Josh Raven, won the toss and elected to field. Somerset's opening batsmen capitalised on this decision, with Kris Martin making an impressive individual score of 53, contributing to a partnership of 73 runs. Although Cornwall managed to slow Somerset's run rate, they struggled to break crucial batting partnerships, leading to Somerset posting a commendable 203 runs off their 30 overs.

In response, Cornwall's openers, Ben Mailes and James Perry, began their chase of the 203-run target. However, an early setback with the loss of James Perry for a duck disrupted Cornwall's momentum. Despite losing regular wickets, Cornwall reached 159 runs for 7 wickets.

The match intensified in the final overs as Cornwall's last-wicket partnership between Alex Hall and Archie Ball added a thrilling 41 runs. Pushing the game to the very last over, Alex and Archie displayed exceptional running between the wickets. However, a run-out on the penultimate ball sealed a narrow victory for Somerset by just 3 runs.

Both teams demonstrated remarkable skill and determination in challenging conditions, making for a fantastic game. Cornwall now looks forward to their next home fixture against Dorset on Sunday, July 7th, at St Stephen Cricket Club.

A special thanks to Richard Budge, chairman of St Stephen, and the ground staff for their relentless efforts in ensuring the ground was safe for play. Appreciation also goes to Jan Raven for the wonderful halftime spread provided for players and families, Mark Perry for scoring, and Darren Hurley for umpiring the fixture. Our gratitude extends to Wayne Bilkey, Cornwall team manager, and Daniel Tonkin, Cornwall team coach, for their dedication and hard work behind the scenes. Lastly, a heartfelt thank you to all spectators who braved the rain to support both teams
