Sunday 1 Match 1 Completed
A run of nine successive Saturdays without any weather problems finally came to an end with the heavy downpour of Friday followed by very windy and showery conditions over the weekend. It meant Duckworth Lewis Stern made its seasonal debut in Tier 1 of the Bond Timber Cornwall League. As ever the geography of the county meant contrasting fortunes with several games in the west and along the south coast escaping almost unscathed while in the north there were cancellations without a ball bowled.
The Premier title race was certainly a case in point. Morning leaders St Austell had their game at Werrington washed out as persistent heavy showers swept across the Bodmin Moor. Fellow challengers Wadebridge and Penzance had better fortunes with their games, in the west, only briefly affected. The Wadebridge innings at Redruth was reduced to 39 overs after a couple of rain interruptions. They reached 174-8 with James Turpin making 42. Redruth’s DLS target was 183 but only Jack Hale (73) and last man Craig Johnson got into double figures in the 110 all out. Penzance got back to winning ways after losing their previous three league games. The match with Hayle at St Clare was initially delayed by an hour to a 40-over game. It was further reduced by five overs with Hayle making 121-7 with Sam Mycocok getting another half-century. Greg Smith swapped the gloves for the ball to take three wickets. Another shower saw the Penzance target reduced to 104 from 28 overs. After Chris Gibson was caught at slip to the third ball Ben Seabrook (52no) and Jack Paull (44no) won the game with eight overs to spare.
Further west only three overs per side were lost in a brief interruption at St Just where the home side were bowled out for 132 by Camborne. Phil Nicholas top scoring with 38. Camborne crashed to 24-7 before mustering 60 all out. Nic Whitelaw (10-4-11-4) and Ben Stevens (10-1-18-3) gave St Just a needed win after losing the last three games. South East Cornwall escaped the showers with Callington making 249-7 in a full fifty overs against Helston. They got to 143-1 with Aidan Libby making 75 before Liam Lindsay went on to hit 101. Helston were all out for 128 in 33 overs with Ben Alford taking four wickets.
Standings after 10 /18 games: Wadebridge 157 pts, Penzance 156, St Austell 146, Redruth 134, Helston 125, Camborne 116, Werrington 116, St Just 111, Callington 97, Hayle 86.
In County Division One the top three took maximum points to remain covered by four points. Falmouth were able to declare on 204 after 39 of 45 overs against Redruth seconds following Antony Angove’s 96. Ben Meek then took 5-31 in the 95-run win. Truro were going well at 215-5 in the 41st over at home to Newquay with Harry Phillips making 72 and Charlie Kent 64. Newquay’s target was reset at 252 but they fell short by 114 runs. A delayed start at Beacon saw a 38-over game initially. That got reduced by another three overs with Paul's Will Trenoweth making 72no in the 214-7. Beacon’s target was increased to 218 but they didn’t get close being dismissed for 101. At Roche, interruptions saw Penzance's innings closed at 163-4 off 28 overs. The Roche target was increased to 203 but they were dismissed for 135 with Jack Williams making fifty. Ryan Edwards took 4-24. Grampound Road got a needed win at home to St Erme whose innings was aborted at 145-8 in the 41st over. Chris Roberts took 5-41 before pulling up with an injury. He was able to bat, however, and made a valuable 37 not out to secure a two-wicket win. For St Erme, Jack Evans took 4-14 to add to his 37. On Sunday he made 52 in the rescheduled game with Redruth seconds. In a 35-over affair, after a delayed start, St Erme made 141. Josh Pengilly hit 51 to secure a five-wicket win for the Reds to see them rise 26 points clear of bottom club Lanhydrock. They had to settle for an abandoned game at home to Mullion on Saturday with the visitors 83-3 off 16 overs with Jackson Edgar unbeaten on 58.
St Austell won the WT Edwards Cup for the fourth time (last in 1996) in a thrilling game at Wheal Eliza by five wickets, with an over to spare. St Austell did well in the powerplay with Adam Snowdon and Liam Watson restricting to 25-2 off six overs. The wickets of Christian Purchase (20) and Simon Keene (25) left the lower order eight overs in which they mustered 45 runs to end on 117-9. Similarly, St Austell lost both openers early. Mike and Alex Bone added 41 before a mix-up saw Alex (22) run out after being sent back. Needing 29 off 21 balls. Gary Bone (25no) and Adam Snowdon (14no) held their nerve, both hitting crucial maximums. In a tense finish, 16 was needed off two overs. After Bone took seven off two balls Snowden struck Keene for a straight six and then glanced the winning boundary with six balls to spare to set off jubilant scenes. St Austell will represent Cornwall in the ECB Vitality Club T20 Area Finals Day at Bridgwater on Sunday 6 August.
Grampound Road are through to the semi-finals of the Voneus Village Cup, following Troon and Werrington in the past. Rain just before the start of their quarter-final with Hook & Newham Basics meant a delay of over five hours before an eight-over game was able to be played. The ‘Road’ made 69-6 and superb bowling saw them dismiss the Hampshire side for only 30 in the final over. Skipper Dave Neville conceded just one run in his two overs. Kent’s Leeds Broomfield will visit Grampound Road in the semi-final on 30 July.
