The Bond Timber Cornwall Premier League season is set for a thrilling finale with three teams, separated by just five points, fighting to avoid the one relegation spot. Penzance won the title, for the third successive season, with two games to spare so all the final day interest will be at the foot of the table where Truro and Werrington are tied on 147 points and Callington has a five-point advantage. In the event of teams finishing level the tie-breaker is the points gained against each other. Callington has a better record against both teams whilst Werrington gained more points than Truro in their two meetings.  The weather affected the League programme on Saturday for the first time since June with a well-predicted weather front arriving in West Cornwall around breakfast time. Heavy showers meant all games in the west of the county were cancelled including Truro’s clash at Hayle.  The east of the county fared a little better with five games completed at Wadebridge, Pencarrow, Tintagel, Bude and Saltash.  Thirteen others started but most only saw a handful of overs played before the rain set in. Callington’s vital Premier League game with Werrington only saw four overs completed while St Austell got to 47-3 in the 14th over at Wheal Eliza against Redruth. The relegation issue will be decided with three games all nearby in mid-Cornwall. Truro host St Austell, Werrington travel to Redruth and Callington are at Camborne.

In County Division One, with Helston also winning the title with two games to spare, the final day interest is who faces the drop with Werrington seconds. Lanhydrock travel to Mullion with a 12 points advantage over Callington seconds. Should Callington beat Falmouth, and survive, they would also need their first team to avoid the drop.

Elsewhere five divisions are still to be decided. Roche maintained their unbeaten record in division two east with victory at Wadebridge by seven wickets. They only need a maximum of a couple of points in their final game at Tintagel to set up a final with Penzance seconds. Hayle seconds won division three west on Saturday, without playing, and will meet St Minver.

In division four west Gerrans need a maximum of eight points at Paul to pip Praze to the title. In the very competitive division four east Pencarrow need a maximum of eleven points at Grampound Road. However,  if they lose they could be overtaken by Saltash St Stephens or Launceston seconds who meet at Lawhitton. Camborne thirds clinched the division five west crown when their top-of-the-table clash with Crofty-Holman was washed out and will play St Minver seconds in the county final.

In division six east St Austell fourths await a final against either St Day or Mawnan. Their division 6 central clash was another unfortunate wash out leaving St Day needing a maximum of 11 points at home to Falmouth fourths. Rosudgeon will claim the division six west title at the expense of  Troon with a maximum of 12 points against Camborne fourths. However, they cannot improve their points average by a  big enough margin to qualify for the final.

Friday 9 September marks the 50th anniversary of Troon winning the inaugural Haig Village Championship at Lord’s in 1972 when they beat Warwickshire’s Astwood Bank by seven wickets.
