Penzance continue to close in on retaining their Bond Timber Premier League title but they were given a close call by St Austell at St Clare before winning by just six runs. It leaves Penzance requiring a maximum of 39 points from the 80 available from the last four games. On a day of extreme heat across the county with temperatures widely reaching 30 degrees, Penzance were restricted to 211-8 – the lowest first innings total on the day in the Premier League. Jack Paull held the innings together before being run out for 64 from a direct hit from Fergus Connolly. Christian Purchase hit 40 but a mid-order collapse saw the home side reduced to 164-8 before Jonny Ludlam (25no) and Tom Dinnis (29no) added a valuable 47 for the ninth wicket. After losing two early wickets St Austell reached 104-2. Alex Bone went on to make 84 and brother Mike scored 39 before being sixth out at 178, with five overs to go. The Saints were seven short of victory when Connolly was dramatically run out by bowler Ludlam with a turn and throw with four balls remaining. St Just remain in second spot after comfortably beating Redruth at Cape Road by 78 runs. Steve Kevern made 86 and young Ellis May 52 in the 233-6. Luke Johnson replied with 53 but Chammy  Edirisinghe’s 4-37 kept him as the leading wicket-taker in the division. Camborne overtook Wadebridge to go third thanks to a three-wicket win at Egloshayle Road. Requiring 246 overseas player Cephas Zhuwao made 125 before Jamie MacDonald (22no) and Ryan Downing (12no) held their nerve with an unbroken eighth wicket stand of 25 to get home with three balls to spare. The relegation battle intensified with Truro gaining a crucial win over Werrington and Callington losing heavily at Hayle. Truro have reduced the gap to three points behind Callington, who they entertain on Saturday. Werrington, who play Callington on the penultimate weekend, are only 13 points off the bottom. Joe Phillips hit 120 to steer Truro to 256-9. Dan Barnard followed his four wickets with 33 but the North Cornwall side ended 98 runs adrift with Joel Brierley taking four wickets. It was one-sided at Hayle after Tom Sharp made 104 and Dan Lello and Kevin Jenkin hit half-centuries in the 301-6. Callington were dismissed for 149.

In County Division One it’s looking more and more a case of ‘when’ rather than ‘if’ Helston will clinch the title. They won convincingly at rivals Grampound Road by 126 runs and now only require a maximum of 27 points from their last four games. A team batting effort got Helston to 265-8 with Ross Leathley, Luke Maugeri and  Gavin Tregenza getting forties. Beacon are back up to second after winning by six wickets at relegation-threatened Callington seconds. Jordan Thomas took four wickets and made 44. At the bottom Falmouth, Newquay and Redruth seconds all got valuable wins to leave Lanhydrock with work to do.  They are tenth and just 11 points ahead of Callington. Adrian Noott made 85 and Harry Roberts 72 in Falmouth’s 274-5 at home to St Erme for whom Kyle van Rooyen made 90 in the 34-run defeat. There was a run-fest at Mullion for whom Lachlan Mark made 148 in the 303-5. He was outshone by Newquay’s Grant Stone who hit 170 not out to secure a memorable eight-wicket win with three overs to spare. Lanhydrock were bowled out for 137 at Redruth with young Josh Pengilly taking 4-12. Tom Stevens continued his great season with 61 after hitting three centuries in lower divisions. Werrington are virtually certain of finishing bottom being 69 points adrift with four to play. Their home game with Paul was played earlier in the season due to a wedding in the Paul camp.

In Division 3 East St Austell thirds overcame Ladock’s 331 by seven wickets. Simon Newland (138), Qasim Jamal (158) and Andrew Bennetts (130no) all hit centuries in a remarkable game. Ahead of what would have been their fifth concession Tideford seconds have withdrawn from Division 5 East.
