Big Family Partnership at Veryan

It was very much a family affair at Veryan Cricket Club on Saturday afternoon, when a father and son combination shared a magnificent partnership of 210 runs.

The home team were top of the Division 3 West table before the start of the match, but were missing no fewer than 10 regulars for the visit of second-placed Gulval.

The west Cornwall side batted first and racked up 212-9, with Ollie Johns picking up three wickets for the hosts and Jake Hawkins taking his first two wickets for the club.

What then followed was something special.

Opener David Bunney's early dismissal brought Andrew Tregunna to the crease with his son Matthew.

Evergreen Andrew, aged 61, had already bowled 11 overs for just 25 runs, but the target of 212 looked a long way off.

However, he provided a splendid supporting role for his son, who hit a fantastic unbeaten 125.

Andrew, who has played for the club for 50 years, finished undefeated on 68, with the pair bringing up victory with more than four overs to spare.

The family flavour was completed by the presence of Phil Tregunna, Andrew's 90 year-old father and chairman of the club, who watched every ball of their stunning partnership.

Even by Veryan’s zany standards, today’s 9 wicket win over Division Three promotion rivals Gulval was outrageous, Going into the game with two bowlers, three batsmen and three Bunneys, the V’s nonchalantly knocked off 212 runs after the early loss of a  Bunney, thanks to an unbroken father and son second wicket stand of 210 featuring captain for the day Matthew Tregunna, 125 not out, and his dad Andrew Tregunna, 68 not out, with proud club chairman, dad  and grandad  Phil Tegunna, looking on. Ben Humphries, pressed into service as an off spinner, produced the ball of the day to dismiss Gulval danger man Tom Curnow and Jake Hawkins also picked up late wickets after an excellent opening 12 over stint from swinger Ollly Johns.  Robert Jobson
