It was a day of mixed weather with some areas staying dry whilst others suffered torrential downpours, particularly along the spine of the county. The result was a mix of results with wins, abandonments, weather cancellations and seven ‘covid cancellations’ with players isolating having been ‘pinged’.

It was a good day for Penzance who have extended their lead to 43 points at the halfway mark of the Premier League season. In a full game at St Just the home side was restricted to 124 with Neil Curnow making 42. Jonny Ludlam took 4-23. Ben Ellis removed Christian Purchase and Dan Lello to leave the visitors 12-3 but Tom Dinnis, batting at five, made 53 not out to secure a five-wicket win with eight overs to spare. Truro lost ground when their home game with Redruth was abandoned after just 11 overs with the Reds on 53 without loss. A torrential lunchtime downpour hit the city. No such weather problems at Camborne however, as the home side were steered to 170-6 against Grampound Road. Simon Hosking made an unbeaten 57 with David Neville taking 4-25. The ‘Road’ were shot out for 80 with Jamie Goldsworthy taking 4-16. The start was delayed for an hour at St Austell who were bowled out for 123 by Werrington. Gary Bone’s 34 not out held the innings together with Ben Smeeth picking up 4-15. Smeeth was unbeaten on 29 to see Werrington home by three wickets with seven balls to spare. Callington and Wadebridge will be awarded end of season average points per completed game after their clash at Moores Park became the first ‘covid cancellation’ in the Premier League.

There were also two such ‘covid’  games in County Division One with the Paul v Gorran and Redruth seconds v St Austell seconds fixtures both called off. Hayle extended their lead with victory at challengers Helston by 46 runs in a game reduced to 33 overs. Ryan Pascoe made 33 not out to see Hayle to 122-7.  Tom Sharp took a wicket off the first ball of the Helston reply and went on to record figures of  5.5-3-2-4 as the home side were all out for 76. In a 25 over game at Lanhydrock, the home side made 185-8. St Erme responded with 129-9 to lose by 56 runs. Beacon dismissed Werrington seconds for 119 at Ladycross and were going well at 60-1 after ten overs when the heavens opened. There was even less play at Falmouth with a delayed start until 3.45 pm against Newquay. Only nine of the 26 overs were possible before more rain caused an abandonment with Newquay 40-2.

 It’s a busy week ahead with the Clive Rosevear Cup finals day at Lanhydrock on Sunday. St Blazey 2 v St Neot (10.30 am) and Callington 3 v Grampound Road 3 (1.30 pm) followed by the final at 4.30 pm. Following this week’s rain-affected championship game in Wales Cornwall CCC play Somerset CCC in an NCCA Showcase 50 over game on Tuesday at the County Ground, Taunton. On Wednesday the Bradley’s Vinter Cup Final sees Helston making a first final appearance for 31 years when they take on Penzance at Camborne. The following night (Thurs 22) the Clive Rosevear Insurance Hawkey Cup Final, twice delayed by covid, sees St Austell take on Wadebridge at Wheal Eliza.
