Tables

It doesn’t happen very often but Saturday saw a total washout in the Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League. Rain began on Friday evening and continued for 24 hours with heavy bursts at times. By 1 pm 68 games had already been confirmed as off and by mid-afternoon, the remainder had also been officially logged. It’s the first time since September 2016 that the whole programme has been lost. August 11th 2018 came close with only one game completed and another abandoned.

Apart from most groundskeepers, following virtually two months without significant rainfall, the main benefactor was Redruth Cricket Club. Their Tribute T20 Kernow Crash games with Truro were the only really meaningful clashes in the final round of pool games. Truro had to win both to qualify but the cancellations were enough to see Redruth through.

The line up for Finals Day on Bank Holiday Monday 31 May at Grampound Road CC is 10.30 am Callington v Wadebridge; 1.30 pm Penzance v Redruth followed by the final at 4.30 pm.

Some action was possible on Sunday with Cornwall Women winning their two T20 games in Wiltshire and Roche have set up a third-round Voneus Village Cup tie at home to Gulval on 23 May. That follows a five-wicket win at Tintagel. Harry Trethewey made an unbeaten 81 as Roche reached their target at 168-5.

The Bradley’s Vinter Cup and Dawe Insurance Andrew Cup opening rounds were all but completed last week.

There were no shocks in the Vinter Cup though Perranporth tested Falmouth making 145-5 but Scott Kellow’s 76 saw the County One side to a seven-wicket win. Hayle won by 45 runs at Barripper and Redruth seconds by 27 runs at Ludgvan with Matt Lello and George Bolland getting sixties for their respective teams. Rhys Brownfield and Charlie Goldsworthy both got half-centuries as Penzance seconds totalled 182-7 at Stithians and Mullion and St Ives both enjoyed impressive run chases. Next week sees Round 2 with the entry of the Premier sides into the competition. Redruth host St Just on Wednesday in the tie of the round.

In the Andrew Cup, several teams had byes into the second round. Redruth III, Crofty Holman, Perranarworthal (Dan Johnson 88), Camborne II’s (Jake Symons 98no) and Truro III’s have joined them with comfortable victories. It was tighter for Beacon II’s who won by nine runs at Leedstown and Constantine at Wendron, who won the derby by five wickets with only two balls to spare. Democracy ruled at Praze with the clubhouse being used as a Polling Station on local election day so the tie with Gulval has been put back to 12 May on health and safety grounds.

This week the ECB Cornwall Premier League gets underway with Grampound Road, Truro and Redruth all confirming the arrival of overseas players to strengthen their hand and St Just is hoping for similar. There’s a fascinating start at strengthened Callington who host champions Penzance. Elsewhere it’s Camborne v Wadebridge, St Austell v Redruth, St Just v Werrington and Truro host Grampound Road. The 50 over games begin at 1 pm.

On Sunday the Devon Academy take on Cornwall Choughs in a Development game at Mount Kelly College. The game will be 50 overs a side with coloured clothing and white ball starting at 11am
