The long dry spell with virtually no rain in April ended on May Day in parts of the county. Though most enjoyed another day of sunshine the southeast of the county saw a spell of rain for much of the afternoon. It was local though with Liskeard only playing four overs while nine miles away at Boconnoc a full game was completed.

In the third round of games in the Tribute T20 Kernow Crash Penzance, Wadebridge and Callington have secured semi-final places at Finals Day at Grampound Road on Monday 31 May with two games to spare. Their games this weekend will determine who tops the pools but the centre of attention will be at Redruth who face Truro with both teams in contention. Truro needs to win both games while a point will be enough for Redruth.

Less than seven overs were possible at Callington on Saturday who were 58-2 when the rain set in against Redruth. With the second game cancelled and the points shared Callington’s qualification was assured.

Truro’s live stream v Werrington

Truro could not afford any slip-ups and they saw off Werrington at Boscawen Park with a brace of victories in a similar fashion. Adam Hodgson made an unbeaten 70 to see the visitors to 135-2 but Kyle Van Rooyen’s 67 secured a six-wicket success. Hodgson made 68 in the second game in the 136-8 but Van Rooyen’s 58 led the charge in an eight-wicket success.

Penzance also recorded a similar double over Camborne at Roskear. The home side were without professional Lewis Goldsworthy who was making his first-class debut for Somerset against Middlesex at Taunton. The 20-year-old produced a stunning performance with the bat and as a result, how much cricket he plays in Cornwall this year must be questionable. In gloomy overcast conditions on the second evening with the floodlights on and former England bowler Steve Finn in full cry, batting at five Goldsworthy impressed with 34 not out in a vital stand to keep Somerset in the game. He added five the next morning before nicking to slip. Having a deficit of 89 on first innings Somerset fought back to dismiss the visitors for 117 to leave a target of 207. The game was on a knife-edge when Goldsworthy arrived at the crease but he hardly put a foot wrong to make 41 not out including the winning boundary. With Steve Davis unbeaten on 44 the pair put on an unbroken seventh-wicket stand of 86 to keep alive Somerset’s hopes of qualifying for Division 1 in the knock-out stages. They move on to play Hampshire this week at Southampton in another vital game.

Meanwhile, Camborne looked to have done well to restrict Penzance to 128-6 with Dan Lello unbeaten on 49. Hopes were soon ended at 16-6 for the hosts and they eventually limped to 62. Tom Wells made 64 in the second game as Penzance got to 135-4. Camborne replied with 77-7.

Wadebridge shared the spoils at St Just making almost identical scores. James Turpin got 66 in the 155-5 but Somerset’s Max Waller hit 74 to help the home side to a six-wicket victory. The second time around Wadebridge made 157-7 with Turpin getting 64 and Matt Ellis taking 4-28. St Just were bowled out for 124 with Waller top-scoring with 56 and Turpin taking 4-18.

At St Austell, Alex Bone made 61 in the 180-8 against Grampound Road. Alex Ridd got 59 in the reply before debutant Virendra Yadav (54no) hit the last two balls of the match for a six and a two to snatch a five-wicket win. In the second game Ridd again top-scored with 62 in the 134-7 but this time St Austell squeezed home by two wickets off the penultimate ball.

In County Division 1 of the Bond Timber Cornwall League Hayle, Werrington seconds and Helston made it a hat-trick of wins. Paul Lello got 80 for Hayle in the 156 run success at Redruth. Dan Howgill and Hugh Tomkinson shared an opening stand of 146 to beat St Austell seconds by ten wickets at Ladycross. William Jenkin’s 5-35 helped Helston to a 111 run win at home to Newquay.

Falmouth got off the mark with a comfortable nine-wicket win against Gorran who only made 109. Beacon enjoyed Lanhydrock winning by 174 runs after making the big total of 329-5. Ben James (157no) and Jordan Thomas (109) put on 188 for the second wicket. St Erme did well to win by 81 runs at Paul after Cas James made 87. Matt Skewes took 4-40 for the hosts who were bowled out for 101 with Eliot Dodd taking 4-17.

In Division 2 West Charlie Hearn’s 6-39 against Truro seconds keeps Mullion at the top with St Ives also recording a third win beating Perranporth by three wickets. At Mount Hawke and Porthtowan, the hosts made 286-7 in reply to the big Stithians total of 349-4. Five visiting batsmen got 49 or more. In the East Grampound Road are the only team to win all three games after their five-wicket win over St Blazey. Roche successfully chased 260 at Holsworthy.

On their return to the League after nine years Foxhole narrowly lost by 14 runs at Pencarrow.
