Tables

Week 2 of the season saw the continuation of the very dry weather. A day of unbroken sunshine but a very strong and chilly easterly wind making life difficult.

At the halfway mark of the Tribute T20 Kernow Crash pool stages the line –up for Finals day is already taking shape. In Pool A, with the top two to qualify, Penzance and Wadebridge lead the way with four wins from four games. St Austell has just the one success with Grampound Road and St Just yet to score.

Similarly in Pool B Callington have won all four games with Redruth just a point behind with 3 wins and a tie. With a win each Camborne, Truro and Werrington have it all to do.

Penzance did the double at St Clare over West Penwith rivals, St Just. Needing a modest 117 Christian Purchase, Dan Lello and Antony Angove all got thirties in the seven-wicket win. The second game was a lot closer with Jack Paull’s half-century getting Penzance to 184-5. Gareth May led the way with 57 in the reply but the visitors ended 10 runs short of victory.

Wadebridge made 148-5 at home to Grampound Road with James Turpin (40) in the runs again. Alex Ridd replied with 72 to get the Road to a creditable 136-4. In the second game, they could only manage 84 all out with Paul Menhinick taking 4-24. Turpin hit 48 in reply to secure the eight-wicket win with eight overs to spare.

Callington’s good start continued with a double at Boscawen Park. Truro made 140-5 with Scott Harvey again in the runs with 47. Coming together at 72-4 in the 12th over Dan Davis (54no) and Olly Allsop (34no) got the East Cornwall side over the line with four balls to spare. Davis (57) was again fluent in the second game to see the visitors to166-5. Truro was dismissed for 136 in the penultimate over with Sam Pengelly picking up 4-21.

Just as the previous week Redruth were involved in two tight finishes, this time against neighbours Camborne at Trewirgie. The Reds hit 154-8 with Lewis Goldsworthy taking 3-9. He was then, unfortunately, run out off a deflection when on 60 in the last over. With 8 then required off the last four balls the visitors lost by three runs. The second game was even closer with the match tied after Camborne needed two off the last ball. Lloyd Brock made 56 for the Reds and Goldsworthy ended up 85 not out.

Werrington and St Austell both got opening wins at Ladycross. Mark Gribble’s unbeaten 68 steered Werrington to 161-3. Mike Bone’s unbeaten fifty got St Austell to within 12 of victory. He then took 3-14 to restrict the home side to 124-9 in the second game. Alex Bone (42) and Matt Lloyd (37) set up a seven-wicket win with almost seven overs to spare.

In County Division 1 of the Bond Timber Cornwall League Hayle, Werrington seconds, Paul and Helston lead the early table with back to back wins. Tom Sharp made 49 not out and Matt Lello 47 as Hayle romped home by eight wickets at Newquay. Werrington were 56-5 at St Erme after being set 140 but Ian Searle’s unbeaten 38 guided his side home by four wickets.

Paul won at Falmouth despite losing their first three wickets for 6 runs. Ben Brooks made 77 in the 177 all out with Scott Kellow picking up 4-26. Only Harry Roberts with 70 threatened with the bat with Damon Nicholls taking 4-35 in the 34 run success. Helston enjoyed a run spree at St Austell making 329-8. Karl Leathley got 130 after Dan Jenkin was run out for 99 in an opening stand of 195. Jon Grey struck back to take 5-65. St Austell seconds were dismissed for 111. After William Jenkin took 4-31 Guy Leathley finished things off with 5 for 29.

There were almost 500 runs at Gorran where the home side chased down Lanhydrock’s 246-8 with three wickets and six overs to spare. Ben Attfield was run out for 97 for the visitors. Opener Dan Semple replied with 130 before being sixth out at 228. Plenty of runs as well at Beacon where James Gool made 127 not out and Ben James 85 in an opening stand of 197. Beacon ended on 275-3 with the Reds bowled out for 174. Tom James took 4-36.

Elsewhere five of the six teams batting first in Division 2 East totalled over 200. Only the second elevens of Callington and Grampound Road have won both opening games. Steve Kidd took 6-35 and made 95 in a losing cause for Menheniot Looe at Holsworthy. Meanwhile, in Division 2 West Mullion, Perranporth and St Ives have made perfect starts.

The Division 3 game at Helston was abandoned when a player fell ill but it is pleasing to report he was sent home after hospital checks.

Ryan Bate hit 191 not out for St Austell fourths and Joe Tunnicliffe was again in form for Praze taking 5-11 and making 79 not out.

Divisions 5 East and 6 West commence on Saturday.
