Following the opening weekend of abandoned and cancelled games, week two of the Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League was a total contrast. Despite the forecast of showers early in the week, it was a dry weekend, and all games were played to completion – a rare 75 victories without a single concession!
The Premier Division provided drama with last year’s top two both losing. The champions Penzance were beaten at home by West Penwith rivals St Just, while Wadebridge lost at St Austell by seven runs in a low-scoring thriller. Penzance went down to a 52-run home defeat to St Just, having at one stage been reduced to 83-7 in pursuit of 227. Ben Stevens produced a key opening spell with figures of 10-5-10-3 and took the big wickets of Christian Purchase, Jack Paull and Sam King. Basil Akram made 38 before being excellently caught and bowled one-handed by Gareth May. The tail wagged with Josh Croom (52), Jonny Ludlam (21) and Ben Fletcher (24) getting to 174 with four overs unused. For St Just, Scott Harvey made 37 against his former club. Chami Edirisinghe, 30, and Philip Nicholas, 51, to get the 200 up. The total was boosted by 12 penalty runs due to a slow over rate. St Austell were bowled out for 105 inside 29 overs by Wadebridge, with only Curtis Dalby passing 20. Wadebridge reached 62-1 with Charlie Mclachlan making 41 before a remarkable collapse to be 98 all out in the 37th over. The spin of Indian professional Nadeera Balasuriya was pivotal as he took 5-34. Helston were defeated at newly promoted Camborne, who reached 115 without loss before Dan Stephens was dismissed for 59. Josh Fontana went on to make 101, but no other batter got double figures in the 218 all out in the 48th over. Australian Jayden Mitchell took 5-29. Helston were reduced to 40-6 thanks to spinner Craig Johnson. He took 5-27 on his return, having spent ten seasons at Redruth. Helston were all out for 77. Callington won comfortably by 101 runs at Grampound Road with all eight batters getting double figures. Somerset’s Fin Hill made 67 with Liam Lindsay and Joe White passing fifty. The Road were dismissed for 171 with former Gloucestershire skipper Chris Dent taking 5-34. Redruth, without injured skipper Liam Norwell, were beaten at home by Werrington by 110 runs. Mark Gribble’s 74 laid the foundation of Werrington’s 243-9 with young Harley Stevens taking 3-22. Toby Whiteford hit 40 for the Reds before becoming one of Ben Smeeth’s 3-22.
In County Division One, promoted Luckett got to 82 without loss at home to Falmouth’s before New Zealander Dylan De Beer took four quick wickets. Requiring 183. Falmouth were 48-3 at one stage, but James Tomlinson made 52 to set up a four-wicket win. Hayle were 53-5 at Beacon before former county stalwarts Tom Sharp (64) and Paul Lello (34) rallied. Jordan Thomas made 61, but he was one of Sharp’s 5-44 to seal a 19-run win for Hayle. Stithians lost a thriller at Roche by one run on their return to Tier 1. Needing 205, they were 172-9 before opener Simon Danby (103no) and Archie Rowe added 31 to end on 203-9. Six had been needed off the final over. Truro lost at home to Paul by four wickets. Damon Nicholls, with 5-19, helped to bowl Truro out for 132 with skipper Adam Price making 44. Paul captain Kameron Collins top scored with 34 in their 134-6. Perranporth hit 226-8 at home to Newquay with Harry Watkins (81) and Travis Woolston (70) opening with a stand of 129. Newquay skipper Adam Cocking hit 53, but the visitors ended up 14 short of victory with the last pair at the crease
On Sunday, in the ECB Club Championship, an understrength Helston were beaten at Penzance by 92 runs​. Jack Paull held the Penzance innings together with 89 not out when they had been 125-5 before reaching 218-8 in 40 overs. Truro lost at Paignton by just five runs after restricting the Devon side to 131.
