The 2026 Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League season got off to a frustrating start with the weather being the winner on the opening day. Unusually, a band of heavy rain the length of the county and beyond swept up from the south in early afternoon, affecting all 72 games. Four games at Mullion, Mawnan, Porthleven and Praze were cancelled without a ball being bowled. The other 68 were all abandoned within an hour or so.
In the Premier Division, only one over was possible at Helston, where Dan Jenkin hit three boundaries against St Austell. After a 42-minute delayed start, only 15 balls were possible at Callington, where the much-awaited clash with champions Penzance was an anti-climax. Wadebridge got to 52-1 in 12 overs at home to Redruth with Australian dual UK passport holder Lachlan Crump 30 not out on his return. Following a 35-minute delayed start, Grampound Road lost three wickets for 44 before rain ended play after 13 overs at Werrington. Harry Gregory was bowled around his legs for 22 by Ben Smeeth just before the rain came. On wet days St Just is not often the venue to see most overs in the county, but that was the case on Saturday as Camborne sent down 25 overs before the rain arrived at 2.30 pm at Cape Cornwall. The hosts found it slow going reaching 69-2. Scott Harvey, on debut, was dismissed by Dinuka Dilshan in the third over. Logan Curnow added 43 for the second wicket with his father, Neil, unbeaten on 41 when play ended. Overall, fewer than 54 overs were possible in the five games.
In County Division One, it was a similar tale with less than nine overs played at Newquay, ranging to the 22 overs sent down by Perranporth at Paul. Travis Woolston struck twice and held a catch as Paul were reduced to 73-4. Newquay were 35-1 against newly promoted Luckett. Elsewhere, the other newcomers, Stithians, took three Beacon wickets for 72, including opener Sam James for 36 after he had put on 67 for the first wicket with his brother Ben. Hayle were 55-2 off 12 overs at home to relegated Truro. Former Truro skipper Tom Sharp (15no) and Dan Lello (19no) were at the crease. Less than ten overs were possible at Falmouth, where Haydn Ayres was unbeaten on 26 in the home team’s 46-1 against Roche.
