Cornwall Cricket Board teams up with Devon & Cornwall Police to protect clubs from crime with SmartWater initiative
Cornwall Cricket Board has partnered with Devon & Cornwall Police to roll out SmartWater, an innovative crime prevention tool, to community cricket clubs across the county.
SmartWater is a coded liquid that can be painted onto valuable equipment such as bowling machines, lawnmowers and televisions. Each unique code is registered through DeterTech, making it possible to identify stolen goods and return them to their rightful owners. The kits also include highly visible warning signs and stickers, which act as a powerful deterrent to criminals.
Unfortunately, in the past year several clubs in Cornwall have suffered break-ins and thefts of expensive machinery, equipment that can leave the country within 24 hours and never be recovered. SmartWater not only helps deter theft in the first place but also increases the chance of recovering stolen items if they are seized.
So far, 19 of Cornwall’s 67 clubs have taken up the offer, but the Board hopes to see that number grow significantly. Thanks to the partnership with Devon & Cornwall Police, clubs can access a SmartWater kit worth £250, including liquid, signs and stickers, for just £60.
Clubs interested in securing their facilities are encouraged to contact Joe Skinner at [email protected].
Joe Skinner, Chief Executive Officer of Cornwall Cricket Board, said: “It’s a great initiative and we thank Devon & Cornwall Police for the relationship and opportunity. It can cost clubs hundreds or thousands of pounds to replace stolen equipment, whether through buying new machinery or facing increased insurance costs. Having SmartWater not only deters theft but can also help reduce insurance premiums. We would welcome more clubs to take up the offer and protect the valuable infrastructure of cricket across Cornwall.”
