Newquay CC Women Make Their Softball Cricket Debut
On 28 August 2025, Newquay Cricket Club’s women’s team played their first ever softball cricket match, taking on St Austell Cricket Club in what proved to be an exciting and memorable evening.
The women’s section was formed earlier this year after Newquay CC approached the Cornwall Cricket Board with the idea of setting up a team. To help get things started, the club hosted the popular “Crisecco” sessions, cricket with a social twist, which attracted new players and grew in numbers every week. These Thursday night sessions built confidence and enthusiasm, leading to the team’s first match.
Batting first, Newquay’s players hit plenty of boundaries on their way to a total of 295 runs. After a short rain delay, St Austell began their chase in a reduced-overs game under an agreed DLS calculation between the teams. The match came right down to the final over, with St Austell needing five runs to win. Newquay’s Paula, who only took up cricket this year, bowled brilliantly, holding the visitors to just two runs and securing their victory.
It was a fantastic debut and a proud moment for everyone involved at Newquay CC. The team now look forward to a return fixture away at St Austell next week.
