Cornwall Super 9s Celebrate Double Success with BBC Make a Difference Award
Cornwall’s first ever disability cricket team, the Cornwall Super 9s, have added another incredible achievement to their growing list of successes after being named winners of the BBC Make a Difference Award in the Active category.
At a special awards evening in Falmouth, head coach Dan and player Ben proudly represented the squad as they received the honour in front of an inspiring gathering of local heroes and community champions. The award recognises individuals and groups who encourage people to get active and improve their physical and mental health through sport.
This latest recognition comes just weeks after the Super 9s lifted the South West League title and went on to finish third nationally, an extraordinary feat considering the team are only in their second year of competition.
The Cornwall Super 9s were formed to provide inclusive cricketing opportunities for players who may not be able to take part in open-age league cricket. The programme enables individuals with disabilities to compete at both regional and national levels, representing Cornwall with pride while enjoying the social and wellbeing benefits of sport.
Head Coach Dan said: “Winning an award has been a great reward for the team and caps off an unbelievable season .
“I am extremely proud of all the squad and their hard work”
Cornwall Cricket Board Chief Executive Officer Joe Skinner added: “Being recognised by the BBC Cornwall, Make a Difference in the Active category is an extremely proud moment for Cornwall Cricket Board and all those who have been involved in making the activity happen, the players, their parents and carers as well as the coaching team whose dedication to making this happen has been excellent. Little acorns grow big oaks, but to get this in two years has been extraordinary. Our challenge is to sustain and grow opportunities. We have limited resources but maybe this is a catalyst for support and further growth?”
With momentum continuing to build, the Cornwall Super 9s are looking forward to welcoming new players, growing disability cricket across the county, and building on their success in the years to come.
