Free Cricket Programme Thrives at Beacon Academy Following Chance to Shine Success

As part of an exciting new initiative from Cornwall Cricket, Beacon Academy in Bodmin has successfully hosted free All Stars and Dynamos cricket programmes, offering pupils the chance to continue their cricketing journey beyond the classroom. This follows the school’s recent participation in the Chance to Shine Whole School Programme, creating a seamless and impactful transition from curriculum-based learning to extracurricular engagement.

A total of 48 fully-funded places were offered to pupils, with after-school clubs delivered directly on the school site. These sessions were led primarily by school staff, many of whom had recently undertaken Continuing Professional Development (CPD) through Chance to Shine. This training significantly boosted their confidence and capability to deliver fun, inclusive cricket sessions to young learners.

Children took part in energetic, game-based sessions designed to promote teamwork, build confidence, and increase physical activity in a supportive environment. Each participant received a free personalised shirt, bat, and ball—helping foster a lasting connection to the sport both in school and at home. To support ongoing delivery, the school also received a full cricket kit bag and equipment, ensuring cricket remains accessible and sustainable in future years.

Beacon Academy’s programme marks a vital step in developing cricket in Bodmin—Cornwall’s largest town without a central cricket club. While nearby clubs such as Lanhydrock and Wadebridge offer excellent opportunities, delivering high-quality, free cricket directly within the school setting is crucial for expanding access and engaging new audiences.

Chris Anderson, School Development Officer at Cornwall Cricket, praised the initiative’s success:  “It’s been incredibly rewarding to see how the Chance to Shine programme has created such a positive impact at Beacon Academy. By linking it directly with free All Stars and Dynamos sessions, we’ve been able to keep the momentum going and offer a clear pathway for children to stay involved in cricket. The joy, enthusiasm, and progress shown by the children have been outstanding – and with local teachers now confidently leading sessions, the long-term sustainability looks really strong.”

This initiative highlights Cornwall Cricket’s commitment to growing the game at grassroots level, breaking down barriers to entry, and supporting schools and communities across the county.
