Sunday 1 Match 1 Completed
The start of the second half of the Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League season was ruined by persistent light rain and drizzle that continued for much of the day in parts of the county. Some play was possible, mainly on the south coast and Tamar valley, allowing 20 of 72 games to be completed.
In the Premier Division, there are new leaders as Wadebridge join Penzance on 149 points but take over due to their one-run victory at St Clare in May. Penzance’s home game with St Austell, as was St Just’s against Redruth, was called off around 2.30 pm.
Wadebridge took advantage to beat Grampound Road in a reduced-overs game at Egloshayle Road. It was reduced to 30 overs, with the Road dismissed with seven balls remaining for 135. From 53-4, Ravi Karunarathna made 38. Matt Lawrence wrapped up the tail to take 4-21. The target was revised to 122 from 27 overs. Matt Robins (44) and Lachlan Crump (32no) secured a seven-wicket victory with four overs to spare.
A 45-over game was possible at Truro, where Helston pulled off a superb win against the odds. Needing 219, they were 113-6 off 29 overs. A stand of 101 for the seventh wicket turned the tide, with Steve Jenkin making 92 off 91 balls, including 12 boundaries. He was dismissed with five to win, but Harry Saunders remained unbeaten on 25 to secure a famous victory with five balls to spare. Dan Jenkin (28) and Billy Taylor (25) had put on 62 for the first wicket before Neil Ivamy took 4-20 from nine overs. For Truro openers Harry Phillips (56) and Charlie Kent (40) added 74 before Ted Phillips made 63 in the 218-9. The leg-spin of Saunders put the brakes on, taking 5-38. A third successive win takes Helston up to third, 14 points off the pace.
Despite a wet morning in North Cornwall, Callington took the option to travel to Werrington, and a 38-over game was possible from just after two o’clock. After being 59-3, the home side batted well to make 243 all out with seven balls unused. Thulina Dilshan hit 108 and Mark Gribble 36 in a fourth wicket stand of 121. In the later stages, Xavie Clarke (3-43) and Aidan Libby (4-28) picked up wickets. Having reached 48-1, a Callington collapse saw six wickets fall for 32 runs. Jordan Duke took 4-17. Ben Ellis hit a late fifty with 4 sixes, but the 91-run defeat was the third on the bounce to see Callington drop to seventh, ten points off the bottom. Werrington move off the foot to sixth.
Just one game survived in County Division One, with Falmouth gaining much-needed back-to-back victories with a last-gasp win at St Austell seconds. Following an afternoon of drizzle, a minimum 20-over game was able to be played with Jack Mallet making 57 not out in the home team’s 129-4. After Adrian Noott made 29 it looked difficult as Falmouth still needed 40 off 26 balls when James Tomlinson (22) went at 90-4. Freddie Ayliffe made an unbeaten 45, and with two required off a chaotic last ball, Aiden Carter scrambled two leg byes thanks to an overthrow.
On Sunday, Penzance made it to their second ECB National Club Championship quarter-final by defeating visitors Bridgwater by 49 runs. Penzance made an impressive 268-8 in 40 overs with Christian Purchase dismissed by Cornishman Kian Roberts on reaching his century. Dorset’s Eckland brothers top scored in the reply of 219, with Tom Dinnis and Tommy Sturgess taking three wickets each. Penzance are away to the Sussex Premier League team Middleton on 26 July.
St Just won the Bradleys Vinter Cup for a record 20th time with a memorable win over Penzance at Camborne. St Just made 153 for seven with Player of the Match Philip Nicholas hitting 53. Penzance, in their ninth consecutive final, were bowled out for 109. After skipper Brad Wadlan made a quickfire 37, the innings fell away. In a superb fielding display, St Just, who included four teenagers, then held on to nine catches, Ellis May took five, while the low, diving catch by Nicholas to dismiss Charlie Sharland in ‘Sunny Corner’ was an ‘unbelievable effort’. St Just win the 2025 Bradleys Vinter Cup
