It was a good weekend for Penzance Cricket Club as they took over at the top of the Bond Timber Cornwall Premier Division and then, twenty-four hours later, made progress to the last sixteen in the Rothesay National Club Championship. Despite the significant rain of the previous couple of days, only six of seventy were cancelled in the entire League. In the Premier, fifty-over games were played at Helston and St Just and delayed starts, by an hour, at Redruth and St Austell. Callington were less fortunate as their game with Truro had to be called off due to persistent showers falling in south-east Cornwall throughout the afternoon.

Penzance won at morning leaders Redruth, but it was a close-run affair. A brief shower midway through the first innings reduced the match from 40 to 38 overs. Redruth lost two early wickets to Mehran Sanwal (3-29) before Toby Stoddard made 23  and Dulash Udayanga hit 42. He was out near the end of the modest 125-7. Justin Beaton (3-22) then dismissed Christian Purchase and Nic Halstead-Cleak with only a single on the board, and Jack Paull became his third victim at 27-3. Grant Stone (25) and Charlie Sharland (37) recovered to 86 before four wickets fell for eleven runs at 97-7 with still 30 required on the DLS adjusted target. Matt Stevens hit 17 before the ninth wicket pair of Jonny Ludlam and Tom Dinnis got the remaining 16 runs. The following day, Purchase hit 153 not out in the eight-wicket win at Bristol’s Golden Hill. It was a repeat of the success a year earlier at the same venue in the National Club Championship. Requiring 215, the winning runs came with eleven overs to spare to set up a home tie with Bridgwater in Round Four.

Penzance lead Redruth by three points, and St Austell are only two points further back after their home win over Wadebridge by 58 runs. Batting at three, Dan Jarman held the St Austell innings together with 61 before being sixth out at 167 just before the innings closed at 173-7 in 40 overs. Connor Cooke (34) helped to add 56 for the third wicket. The visitors reached 35-1 before collapsing to 42-7. Matt Rowe (36) and Finn Wilkinson (31) added 56 for the eighth wicket, but Andrew Libby (5-15) had the final say to wrap the innings up at 115 with 17 balls remaining.

A thrilling game at Helston saw Grampound Road make 257-7 and hold on to win by four runs. Harry Gregory made 50 after the visitors had been 105-5. He shared a sixth wicket partnership of 77 with Ravi Karunarathna, who went on to hit an unbeaten 88 off 58 balls that included 5 sixes. Harry Saunders took 3-48. The top eight all got double figures in the Helston reply, with Steve Jenkin run out for 54. Karl Leathley made 31 and Billy Taylor, Jayden Mitchell, Mark Jenkin and Sunny Osmont all got twenties. Nine were needed off the final over, but Karunarathna only conceded four runs before bowling Matt Jilbert off the final ball.

It was almost as close at St Just, where Werrington travelled the length of the county to lose by 12 runs. The home top order was responsible for their 192-9. They were 156-3 at one stage before Justin Stephens was dismissed for 39, and Chami Edirisinghe soon followed for 41. Earlier, Neil Curnow made 32 after Ellis May opened with 25. Mark Taskis took 3-26. Werrington were going well at 131-3 when Adam Hodgson fell for 50. They collapsed losing six wickets for 32 runs with the miserly Edirisinghe taking 3-7 from ten overs. The last pair of Ben Smeeth and Jordan Duke were left to get 30 off 22 balls, but they ended up 13 short.

Truro’s cancellation at Callington sees them at joint bottom with Werrington, with Grampound Road only two points better off. The whole division is covered by 42 points after seven games.

By comparison, in County Division One, the span is 72 points from top to bottom, and it would have been more had the bottom side, Roche, not got their first success of the season. The top three all won with Hayle leading Beacon by two points and Camborne, who they meet on Saturday, by nine points.

Hayle won at Falmouth by just one wicket, though they did manage to lose three wickets with two runs required. Needing 170, Tom Sharp made 72. He had taken 4-27 in the Falmouth innings, which Adrian Noott anchored with 80. Beacon were dismissed for 124 in a 40-over game at Perranporth after reaching 87-1. Sam James made 43 before Bryn Evans took 5-18. Tom Bradburn made 38 as Perran were dismissed for 87 with five overs remaining. Jordan Thomas took 3-8 from six overs.

Camborne had a dramatic home win over St Erme thanks to an unbroken eighth wicket stand of 71 between Liam Weeks (45no) and Jacob MacDonald (30no). Opener Josh Fontana made 39 with Ryan Pascoe taking 3-27. Kyle Van Rooyen and Shane Tangye both scored 33 at either end of the St Erme innings as they posted 179-9. MacDonald had a good game, taking 3-35.

Newquay were bowled out for 128 in a 45-over game at home to St Austell Seconds. Chris Jordan made 31, and Henry Johnson took 4-14. After James Carter made 27, the Saints fell away to 72 all out, with Toby Chillingworth wrapping things up with 4-8. Roche skipper Stewart May led from the front as his side got their first win with a 29-run home success over Paul. May top scored with 38 in the 151-9 from 45 overs. He then took three wickets to reduce Paul to 20-3, and despite Kieran Bowden’s 43, the visitors were dismissed for 122 with four overs remaining.

Perranporth are through to the National stages of the Voneus Village Cup after winning the Cornwall & Devon Group Final at Bridestowe & Belstone by three wickets. Requiring 102, they had been 39-5 and 88-7 before Cameron Bishop’s 57 not out saw them over the line. They now play former National Village champions Goatacre (Wiltshire) at Reen Manor on Sunday, (22 June.
