Cornwall Cricket Board Promotes Umpire Training with Sponsorship from Specsavers

In preparation for the upcoming cricket season, the Cornwall Cricket Board (CCB) has successfully run a series of umpire training courses across the county. These courses, designed to encourage more individuals to take up umpiring and support the growth of the game, have been well received by local cricket enthusiasts.

With the support of headline sponsor Specsavers, four umpire training courses were held at key locations, including Callington, Redruth, and two in Truro. A total of 33 new umpires have been trained as a result. This initiative is part of the CCB’s ongoing commitment to developing and strengthening the grassroots cricket community in Cornwall.

The courses, which were available to participants at a discounted rate of just £20 per person, thanks to the generous sponsorship from Specsavers, provided an accessible and affordable opportunity for aspiring umpires to gain the essential skills needed for officiating at both grassroots and competitive levels. The sponsorship also provided the CACO umpires with a complimentary shirt to stand in the Premier and County 1 games.

Managing Director Joe Skinner said: “Umpiring is such an important part of making the game happen, plus helping to create a safe and enjoyable environment for players. Our education programme has been really successful this spring with the 33 people trained including women and young people, some as young as 14 years of age. We would like to thank Specsavers for their support which helped make it more accessible. We hope that we will be able to continue this relationship with Specaavers so as to help future umpires. The game needs more trained umpires to ensure players remain safe and enjoy the game. Umpires are integral to the successful running of the game, so let’s get educated and develop skills. If people are interested in doing the course in the future we will welcome them signing up at the next available opportunity.”

These training courses come at a time when the demand for qualified umpires is growing, as cricket continues to expand in popularity across Cornwall. With local clubs relying on competent umpires to ensure fair play and uphold the spirit of the game, the Cornwall Cricket Board’s investment in umpire education is a crucial step toward safeguarding the future of the sport in the region.

Through the success of these courses, the Cornwall Cricket Board is fostering a deeper connection between the local community and the game, while also creating pathways for the next generation of cricket officials.
