Women’s Hardball Indoor Cricket League Kicks Off with Exciting Matches

The Cornwall Cricket Board proudly hosted the thrilling launch of the Women’s Hardball Indoor Cricket League last Friday evening, marking a significant milestone for women’s cricket in the region.

The league features six competitive teams—Wadebridge, Werrington, Truro, Redruth, Perranporth, and Helston—battling it out from January through March. Each team will face every other team during the season, following the same format as the Cricket Board’s Sunday six-a-side indoor (mixed gender) league. This initiative promises an action-packed season and a fresh challenge for the talented women cricketers of Cornwall.

Opening Night Highlights
Friday’s matches showcased Wadebridge, Werrington, and Truro in a series of intense clashes that set the tone for the league.
Game of the Night: Wadebridge vs. Werrington
The opening game delivered nail-biting excitement as Wadebridge secured a narrow victory over Werrington. Werrington posted a strong total of 64, thanks to a stellar 25-run retired performance by Emma Horrell. However, Wadebridge’s disciplined bowling, led by Bryher Walford’s tight spell, kept the game within reach.
Wadebridge’s chase was a strategic effort, with key contributions from Nicki Walford and Grace supporting a match-winning knock from Phoebe. A series of quick partnerships in the final overs ensured Wadebridge crossed the line with just one ball to spare. Notably, Steph Smeath bowled an economical spell for Werrington, adding to the evening's drama.

Truro Dominate with Back-to-Back Wins
Truro made an emphatic start to their campaign, securing two convincing victories over Wadebridge and Werrington.
In their first game, Truro restricted Werrington to 64, with Georgie delivering an excellent bowling performance. Despite Werrington’s Jo anchoring the innings, Truro’s powerful batting lineup—featuring Lisa Harper’s big hits and Tamsin Hearn’s precise touch play—guided them to victory with three overs to spare.
The second game followed a similar pattern as Wadebridge managed 56 runs batting first. Bryher Walford impressed again with the bat, but Truro’s swing bowler Ashley Bridges stifled the scoring in the middle overs. Truro captain Izzy Newell showcased her indoor cricket expertise, steering her team home with a composed innings, ably supported by wicketkeeper Emma.
