Peter Barnicoat RIP

William Charles Peter Barnicoat b Truro 19/1/1932

I was very sad to hear that news that Truro CC’s legendary former cricketer, Peter Barnicoat has passed away at the age of 92.

I felt that his passing should not go unnoticed and I should put a few paragraphs together to underline his importance and achievements at both Truro CC and for Cornwall Cricket.

Many  will remember Peter as a great character, captaining the 3rd XI during his twilight Cricketing years.

Peter was my first regular Cricket Captain along with Peter Lidgey and late 2nd XI Captain, John Hill, when I started playing adult Cricket in the mid-late 1980’s.

Peter had the ability to win matches through his own performance, through his Swing/Seam bowling and middle/late order batting and we all looked up to him.

I am sure that a lot of us have memories and tales to tell about Barney!

Not many Cricketers can boast that they have played Cricket for a club through 5 or maybe 6 decades!

Peter played for Truro CC throughout the 1950’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and early 90’s.

We believe that he may have also played in some capacity in the late 1940’s?

Peter played a very significant part in five of Truro CC’s County Championship winning Teams, 1965, 1970, 1971, 1972 and 1974 and three Vinter Cup Winning Sides, 1968 (4-42), 1974 and 1976.

He also helped the 3rd XI to two promotions, during 1986 and 1988 seasons.

Obviously, there were many personal accolades too.

As well as his Club Cricket accomplishments, he represented Cornwall on many occasions after making his debut in 1959 and notably was selected to play in the 1970 Gillette Cup fixture v Glamorgan at Boscawen Park.

What a legend! RIP Peter.
